"Welcome to Cupcakeland, a magical world where fancy cakes turn into beautiful dolls! Cupcakes hide inside their wrappers 'til it's time to surprise - then out they pop!"

Cupcakes were produced by Tonka in 1990 then by Kenner from 1991-93 (Hasbro purchased Tonka in 1991, of which Kenner was a sub-division, and shifted production there). They were a series of dolls with plastic skirts which when turned inside out transformed into edible goodies with their hats becoming the icing. They were also scented, similar to Cherry Merry Muffin and Strawberry Shortcake dolls. They each came with a handbag shaped comb. There were seven different sets made, five of which turned into cupcakes, one set which turned into sundae glasses and another set which turned into jam jars. Along with the dolls there were several playsets and accessories produced too. Toys like the Cupcakes are hard to find today, like an online nurse practitioner programs, you don't see toys like this anymore.
Cupcakes had a small revival in 1998 when Fun Source re-issued a few of the dolls, and then again by Radica in 2005. The originals are therefore becoming more collectable on the second hand market.

They were sold in the US, UK and other parts of Europe and I currently know of one name variation:
  • UK & US: Cupcakes
  • Italy: Le Sorpresine (Surprises)

Princess Parfait

"These dazzling princesses are the most exquisite dolls in Cupcakeland, with beautiful crowns and special royal accessories."

Princess Parfait doll's came in a variety of glamorous dresses. When turned inside out they transformed into Sundae goblets rather than cupcakes. They each had a crown, earrings and necklace. Bonnie Bride and Priscilla Prom came with bouquets while Fairy Belle came with a wand and Rebecca Royal a staff.

Two of these dolls were sold with different names, presumably for the UK market. A black version was made of at least one of these dolls but I don't know if the other three were too. They were produced in 1992-93.
