Keypers were made in
the 1980's by Tonka
and consisted of large, hard plastic bodied adults and
small soft plastic bodied babies. The adult Keypers had
a key (with their name on) which locked and unlocked a
door somewhere about their body, and the baby Keypers
had a slit in their backs where you could store things.
The first series of adult
and baby Keypers had six different animal types (including
two with variations). They all had non glittery eyes and
short, mono coloured hair, whilst the second series
had 11 pairs with glittery eyes and long, multi coloured
hair. Five of these pairs were reissues from the first
series, some looking quite different, and there were also
six new additions. All adults came with various accessories
including a key, brush & a keyring which they both
slotted onto. Some also came with hats and neck frills.
The babies also came with brushes (slightly smaller than
the adults, no loop at the end for the keyring) and other
accessories such as bottles and bibs.
Along with the plastic toys there were
large plush adult Keypers, books, games and other items.

The second series of Keypers had
glittery eyes and long, multi coloured hair.
There were 11 different animals,
with 5 pairs returning from the first series and
6 new pairs. There were also several European variations
which were produced in different colours.
Each adult came with a Finder, brush,
key and keyring plus one or two other small accessories.
Each baby came with a brush and one or two small
accessories.

There were four versions
of the adult pony produced, the purple one being the most
common. There were three colour variations, which as far
as I know did not come with Finders. I have also found another
adult pony made from a similar mould to the main one and
there were two quite different ones produced too (neither
came with Finders). The variations were only released in
UK & Europe.

Knock-offs/Fakies
This pony had a sound
box inside its body rather than a compartment opened by
a key. I don't know what noise it made, but presumably some
kind of horsey noise! I have included it as it is so similar
to the other ponies it is often mistaken for a Keyper, but
it wasn't made by Tonka or marked Keypers. They are mostly
found in France and came in at least three colour variations.

Five of the six characters from the original
series were re-designed and released as part of the second
series. Along with different coloured bodies, just like
the new characters, they also had sparkly eyes and long
tri-coloured hair so are easy to tell apart from their
original versions.
