"Lovable, Huggable!"

Pound Puppies were designed by Mike Bowling in 1984 and have been in production ever since, changing hands many times (as you can see)! They started out life a series of soft puppies which were adopted when children bought them (just like Cabbage patch Kids). Pound Pur-r-ries were added to the line, and as they grew in popularity, more and more related merchandise was produced including books, animated videos, puzzles and games.

Over the years they have been produced by Irwin, Hornby, Tonka, Galoob, Mary Meyer, Jakks Pacific, Mattel and Flair. Every company re-designed the puppies slightly and brought out different lines, Tonka and Galoob being the most prolific. Just to make things even more confusing, Pound Puppies were also produced for different parts of Europe under various names and by various companies (which were all also differently designed).

  • UK & US: Pound Puppies
  • Canada: Piteux Pitous (as well as Pound Puppies)
  • Germany: Wauzi and Miauzi
  • France: Pitou
  • Brazil & Argentina: Snif Snif

Pound Puppies produced by Hornby :: 1984-1986

Hornby produced the Pound Puppies for the UK market, with Pound Puppy Yappies, Newborns, At Play Mummy and Babies and the Pound Pur-r-ries too. The Yappies and Mummy's were also produced by Irwin.

Each puppy came with a collar, adoption certificate and packaging which doubled as a kennel. They also had a "PP" emblem sewn on their bottoms or "PPY" for the Yappies.

Plush :: Pound Puppy Yappies

"Hi, I'm a Pound Puppy Yappie and I'm looking for a warm, loving home. I've been waiting for someone like you to choose me as their very own pet. I'm all ready to go in my own carrier kennel. You can give me a name and play with me. I'm easy to take care of just give me a little love and lots of hugging every single day. Won't you take me home with you, I'l love you very much."

The Pound Puppy Yappies had PPY rather than PP embroidered onto their bottoms and were about 10 inched long.

Plush :: At Play

At Play puppies were posed slightly upright, ready for play!.

Plush :: Mummy and Babies

The mummy puppies were about 18 to 24 inches long and had a velcro pocket in their bellies where their babies could fit. She came with either two or three babies, which were about 7 inches long.

Plush :: Newborns

Plush :: Other Pound Puppies

The talking puppy (13" long) below said four random phrases when his cord was pulled:

  • "I love you very much."
  • "I'm your best friend."
  • "Thank you for a lovely home."
  • Please take me to bed."
Talking Puppy

I don't know anything about this old puppy!

Grandpa

This puppy is much furrier, but not fluffy like Tonka's Pound Puppy Furries were.

Furry

Plush :: Pound Pur-r-ries

The Pound Pur-r-ries produced by Hornby were the same as those produced by Tonka (both design styles). It also looks like there were tiny babies produced too (Mummy and Babies?).
