"Hug me - I glow!"

Snugglebumms were produced by Playskool in 1984 and MB from 1985*. They were a series of funny, squat little characters with long furry backs for brushing. Baby Snugglebumms giggled when shook, and the adults lit up when hugged. There were also pets, bugs, miniatures and puzzles.

*Hasbro purchased both Playskool and Milton Bradley (MB) in 1984 and as such Snugglebumms were first produced under the Playskool name, then later under the MB name. The toys themselves remained the same but the packaging changed.

They were sold in the UK and other parts of Europe under varying names (none of which really mean anything!):
  • UK, US & Italy: SnuggleBumms
  • France: Les Bum-Bum
  • Germany: Knuffelbunt
  • Holland: TroelieWoelies

Storybooks

Each Snugglebumm came with a small storybook. At first the cover only featured the babies, then changed to include Mama and Papa too. Both versions of the storybook differed slightly on their covers from Playskool to MB.

Princess Snuggleina came with her own storybook. The design remained the same from Playskool to MB.

Tuggles also came with his own storybook. I've only ever seen him released by MB.

Storybooks & Packaging

The Playskool packaging was far simpler than the MB packaging, of which there were two designs for the babies. The second MB packaging design was the one used for all European Snugglebumms babies, indicating that Playskool never released Snugglebumms in Europe before MB took over. I've not found any Dutch packaging, but an old Dutch commercial shows the same design was used as the rest of Europe.

I've not come across many packaged Snugglebuggs or Snugglepets, but the UK/US version seems to have only been produced on blisterpacks, whereas the European production were all boxed. You can also see how the Snugglebuggs name changed to Shugglepets and Basil's name changed to Bumble.

The packaging design for Tuggles was the same country to country, although his name varied. It only appears to have ever been produced under the MB name.

As with all other packaging, the original Playskool and later MB illustrations were different for the miniatures too.
