Surprise Friends were produced by Hasbro in the early 90's. Each set comprised of a plush mother animal measuring about 12 inches long and a number of soft babies which were about 4 inches long. They had plastic faces and came in a variety of colours. The number of babies included varied and each one was different. The mothers came with a name tag around their necks which also came in a variety of colours.

"Guess how many! It's a surprise! How many girls! How many boys!"

Kitty Surprise

"Mommy's having baby kitties!"

These are a few images of the different Surprise Kitties. There were two types of adult poses, the lying adults looked more like lions than cats.

Kitty Surprise - Baby Kitties

The Baby Kitties were also available separately. Each box included one kitten, a sleeping bag, pajama's and one surprise outfit. It also looks like they came with a rattle and bottle which, unlike the other babies, could fit into their mouths. Baby Puppies were also sold like this but am unsure if any of the others were.

Kitty Surprise - Other Kitties

There were also medium sized kittens produced which came on their own. Puppies were also produced in this size but am unsure if any of the others were.
