Keypers :: Penguins

"Far off in a land of magic and fun live the Keypers and the Finders. Keypers keep treasures locked safely inside, while Finders travel about seeking to find! Meet each of the Keypers and their new friends, they have special ways to keep your secret treasures safe."

Keypers were produced by Tonka from 1985 to 1992. They were large, hard plastic bodied adults and small softer plastic bodied babies. The adult Keypers had a key (with their name on) which locked and unlocked a door somewhere about their body, and the baby Keypers had a slit in their backs where you could store things. Along with the plastic toys there were large plush adult Keypers, books, games and other items.

Penguins

I’ve found five versions of the adult penguin Keyboard produced (two from series one and three from series two). There were also two versions of his Finder Hummer, but just one version of the baby penguin Kazoo.

Keyboard [S1] Keyboard [S1 V] Keyboard [S2] Keyboard [S2 V]

Kazoo [S1] Hummer Finder [S1] Hummer [S1 V, S2 & S2 V]

Penguins [Series 1]

Along with the main red & black version of Keyboard there was also a colour variation produced. Kazoo, to the best of my knowledge, was not released in two colours nor was he re-released in the second series unlike Keyboard (who was again released in two colours).

Keyboard’s accessories:

  • Red Top Hat & Bow Tie
  • Yellow Key & Brush
  • Red Keyring

Kazoo’s accessories:

  • Yellow & White Blanket
  • White Block with Red Key Symbol
  • Yellow Brush

Penguins Variations [Series 1]

This variation is a bit more complicated. Keyboard was released in these colours with single coloured hair (short and white) with non glittery eyes, but he was also released in series two with glittery eyes and long pink curly hair.

Interestingly, this version of Keyboard was show on Euro back packaging of some series two toys, but stated to not be available to buy in the four of the five countries translated on the back (UK, France, Italy and Netherlands – it was sold in Germany). I say interesting, because I bought mine in the UK, so they must have been sold here at some point!

Keyboard’s accessories:

  • Blue Top Hat
  • Red Bow Tie
  • Blue Key & Brush
  • Purple Keyring

Penguins [Series 2]

Keyboard now had glittery eyes and long, curly tri-coloured hair. Along with the main purple winged one there were also two other colour variation. Kazoo was not produced in series two. Both came with the same coloured accessories and Finder.

Keyboard on the left has had his hair cut short.

Keyboard’s accessories:

  • Pink Bowtie
  • Blue Top Hat
  • Blue Key & Brush
  • Purple Keyring
  • Hummer Finder
