So Soft Ponies [+ UK/Euro & other unflocked Variations]

"So Soft Ponies love to snuggle up close. Their delicately-flocked bodies feel so nice to touch. Straight-haired ponies come with a hairbrush. Curly-haired ponies come with a comb. Scented body sticker and ribbon come with all ponies."

So Soft Ponies had flocked bodies with their symbols just visible underneath. Year 4 had a total of twenty two ponies, the most ever released in one set. Six were old characters (Cherries Jubilee, Heart Throb, Gusty, Lickety-Split, Posey and Surprise) and the rest were new.

In the US they were released in two goes, with sixteen in 1985 and six more added in 1986. There was also one So Soft Pony who came with the Party Gift Pack and Sundance was also given the flocked treatment. Five more ponies were added in Year 5.

"Ponies" / "Movie Stars" [UK/Euro set]

Outside of the US, nine of the So Soft Ponies were released without the flocking. In the UK this set was called simply "Ponies", but in Europe they were called "Movie Stars" as all ponies featured in "My Little Pony: The Movie".

None of the unicorns or pegasi had glittery symbols, as they had done previously in the US. There was also two symbol versions of Buttons, and Magic Star changed pose.

Each pony came with a brush or comb, ribbon and round, puffy sticker.

Pony Friends [Scandinavian/South African set]

Cupcake and Truly were sold in a set called Pony Friends in Scandinavia and South Africa, which also included Cherries Jubilee, Hopscotch, Posey and Shady. Hopscotch was the only pony in this set who was not also part of the So Soft line.

Each pony came with a dove brush, ribbon and round, puffy sticker.

Year 3 UK "My Little Pony" back packaging on the left and Y4 Scandinavia "Pony Friends" on the right shows Honeycomb changed to Truly, Snowflake changed to Shady, and Gypsy changed to Cupcake.

Unflocked Brazilian Ponies

Paradise and Ribbon were also produced as unflocked ponies and were only sold in Brazil, in a set which also included Heart Throb, Magic Star, North Star, Shady, Truly, Twist and Windwhistler (sold around Year 7 - 1986/87).

Apart form being unflocked there were many other changes too with only Magic Star, Paradise and Shady remaining the same in pose and pony type to the US release. The ponies had a shine to their bodies too, as with all Brazilian ponies.

Twinkle-Eyed Ponies [+ Euro variations]

"Twinkle Eyed Ponies have lustrous eyes that sparkle like a rainbow. Each comes with a rainbow comb for grooming the lovely streaked hair, a ribbon and a scented body sticker."

Twinkled-Eyed Ponies had sparkly jewel-like eyes and multi-coloured hair. There were nine Twinkle-Eyed Ponies released in Year 4 and would be five more released in Year 5. There was also one Twinkle-Eyed Pony who came with the Party Gift Pack.

In the US they were released in two goes, with six in 1985 and three more added in 1986. Ribbon and Sweet Pop were never sold in the UK, which also released the Twinkle Eyed Ponies in slightly different groups during Year 5.

They all came with a comb, ribbon and scented body sticker.

Baby Ponies [German set]

These baby ponies were only sold in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They all had adult counterparts.

Baby Cotton Candy from Year 3's Baby Ponies set was included in this set (unchanged), along with four exclusive new baby ponies and one which was also released in the UK (Baby Lemon Drop, c/w Baby Pony Stroller) but posed differently.

Each pony came with a bottle, teddy bear brush and a ribbon.

Baby Ponies with Beddy-Bye Eyes

"Cute and cuddly...Baby Ponies feature Beddy-Bye eyes that open and shut when you put your Baby to sleep. Each includes a diaper with velcro fastener, ID necklace, pull toy, baby bottle, bib, bird comb, ribbon and scented body sticker."

Baby Ponies with Beddy-Bye Eyes had eyes which opened and closed, and also had eye lashes.

This set was not sold in the UK, but four of these ponies were also released with regular eye as part of the Baby Ponies Play and Care set in UK. Baby Lickety-Split was also released as part of Year 5's Baby Ponies with First Tooth set.

Each pony came with one large accessory and a variety of small accessories. They also came with a brush or comb, ribbon and scented body sticker.

There were also four other Baby Ponies with Beddy-Bye Eyes released in various Y4 playsets.

Baby Pony Play & Care [UK Set]

Baby Pony Play & Care set was the UK's alternative to the US's Beddy-Bye Eyes set. It included four af the same characters but all had regular eyes. This set was also sold in France and Germany.

All accessories remained the same as the BBE set except wherever the word diaper appeared it now read Snugfit.

Brazilian Set

Brazil released at least three baby ponies with accessories and regular eyes (Baby Cotton Candy, Baby Gusty and Baby Lofty). Baby Gusty was was an earth pony (as was adult Gusty). Baby Cotton Candy had three freckles on her nose just like the Year 3 UK set pony. Baby Lofty looked the same as the US version, apart from her eyes.

Flutter Ponies

"It's easy to pretend your Flutter Ponies can fly...just push a button and their iridescent wings flutter gracefully. Each pony comes with a styling hairpick, metallic ribbon and a scented body sticker."

Flutter Ponies were smaller then the other ponies with long, thin legs and extra long, curly hair. They had delicate iridescent plastic wings that easily broke making it very hard to find a complete pony these days. The wings were inserted into a shell shaped button on their backs which when pressed made their wings move up and down. A second set of Flutter Ponies was released in Year 5 and two differently designed winged ponies were released in Years 6 and 7. There was also one Flutter Pony who came with Y4's Party Gift Pack and one more in Y5's Slumber Party Gift Pack.

Each pony came with a flower hair pick, metallic ribbon and scented body sticker.

Megan and Sundance were reissued in Year 4. Megan had a new dress and Sundance was a So Soft Pony. This set was not sold in the UK.

"It's always a happy day when Molly and Baby Sundance come to play. Molly is fully dressed, with bendable legs to ride on Baby Sundance or other baby ponies. Baby Sundance has Beddy-Bye eyes that open and shut, bridle and ribbon. Brush and scented body sticker also included."

In Year 4, Megan was given a younger sister named Molly who came with her own pony, Baby Sundance, who had Beddy-Bye Eyes. They came with a bridle, brush, comb and body sticker that featured them both. They were not sold in the UK. A prototype model of Baby Sundance was produced with a First Tooth, but this was never put into production. She was only ever seen in a US promotional Hasbro booklet and a TV advert for the Satin Slipper Sweet Shoppe in this body type.

Pretty 'n Pearly Baby Sea Ponies [+ UK set]

Pretty n' Pony Baby Sea Ponies had shimmery bodies. Surf Rider and Sea Shimmer returned from Year 3 along with four new characters. They had no symbols. Year 4 floats included two new shapes (alligator and frog), as well as fish & turtle from Year 3.

Each pony came with a different coloured whale shaped brush, and a round, scented puffy sticker.

The UK version had the same four new characters as the US set but instead of Surf Rider and Sea Shimmer the set included Tiny Bubbles and Sea Star (both returning from Year 3). Ripple, Sunshower and Water Lily were in slightly different poses with their head facing forward (rather than up), so only Beachcomber remained the same as the US set.
