Luke Elkins was born in 1851 in Chalford, Westbury, Wiltshire and was one of eleven children. He worked as a Labourer in Private Gardens (I have yet to find out where), whilst his father worked as a Thatcher. Luke died in 1931 aged 79.

Lucy Annie Goddard was born in 1851 in Corsley, Wiltshire and was one of six children. Her father worked as an Agricultural Labourer. Lucy died in 1910 aged 59.

Below is a photo I believe to be Luke and Lucy, take c.1900 in Westbury, Wiltshire.

Luke & Lucy Elkins?

In 1870 Luke's brother Frank emigrated to America. The following year Luke traveled over with his sister-in-law Theresa and nephew Henry Oliver Elkins, and Lucy traveled over in 1873. Lucy and Luke married six days after she arrived and they returned to England five years later with two children.

Ships records state:

Name: Luke Elkins
Occupation: Mason
Age: 20
Sex: Male
Literacy: Unknown
Arrived: 3 July 1871
Origin: England
Port: Liverpool & Queenstown
Port Arrival: New York
Last Residence: Unknown
Destination: USA

Ship: City Of Brussels
Passage: Unknown

  • Name: Lucy Goddard
  • Occupation: Spinster
  • Age: 22
  • Sex: Female

  • Arrived: 10 July 1873
  • Origin: England
  • Port: Bristol
  • Port Arrival: New York
  • Last Residence: Unknown
  • Destination: USA
  • Plan: Unknown
  • Ship: Lapland
  • Passage: Unknown

It is interesting to note that Luke states his occupation to be a Mason when he was in fact a Gardener. Further research revealed that his brother Frank was a member of the Mason's, so perhaps that was what was meant? I could also be a mistake as the occupation is dittoed from three men above.

In 1938 Frank's eldest son Henry Oliver Elkins and his second wife Elizabeth (who took this photograph) came over from America to visit his cousins.

Children
Luke and Lucy had nine children but I only know about seven. My Great Grandfather was the second child born. Their first two children were born in Oswego County, New York, America, and the rest were born in Westbury, Wiltshire. The 1911 census states that they had a total of nine children, six still living and three had died. Only one of the seven children I know of had died by 1911, leaving two children unaccounted for in the records I've researched so far. They lost two more son's during WW1.

Occupation:
  Glove Factory [1901 Census]

Before Harriet married she was working in a Glove Factory, where she no doubt met Gustav, who in 1901 was working as Glove Cutter. Harriet and Gustav had one child who was still-born. Gustav was from Breslay, Germany and went by the name George. They were both still alive in 1949 when a photo of them was taken of them on his 78th birthday. Harriet died in 1956 aged 80. I haven't found a record of Gustav's death yet.

John, my great grandfather, was born in Oswego County, New York America but lived there for only a few months. He worked as a Gardener in private gardens all his life. In 1901 John was visiting friends in Leicester, Leicestershire and at some point he must have traveled to Huntingdonshire where he met Alice, my great grandmother. They moved around a lot after that from Surrey to Huntingdonshire to Buckinghamshire and finally Bedfordshire. Sometimes Alice was just unpacking when they would up a move again! John and his wife Alice had six children - see details.

Thomas's middles name of Dallas (as stated on his birth certificate) maybe related to his parents time spent in the USA. I don't believe he married. Thomas was 37 when he died in 1916, a year later his younger brother Albert also died in battle.
