UK Census Records

Really useful and interesting in tracing your family and seeing what they were up to! Bare in mind that there are lots of errors with peoples names, birth place and age (both on the original forms and in transcription). For instance, I eventually found my Smy relatives in the 1851 Norfolk census transcribed as Ling! The frilly writing on the original forms had been completely misread. Once you know this, and get used to how to search, it gets easier and easier to find the once missing links!

There are lots of websites with UK census records on:

UK BMD Indexes [Birth, Marriage & Death]

The recording of births, marriages and deaths was started in 1837 in England and Wales. For more information on what can be found on each certificate <click here>. To order a certificate you need to know the GRO index reference (Year & Quarter, County & District, Name). By giving the office this index reference it allows them to quickly identify the correct entry. This reference is only of use to the General Register Office and not to local registration offices who have their own system.

Church Records - Christening/Baptism, Marriage & Burial

Family Search
Free to search.
Search by full name or surname only, parents names (to find all children) or event. Much information is from church, but there is also a lot of records put on by members which have no source listed so cannot be relied on to be correct. Members have also submitted pedigree files, which can be useful, but again I have found many discrepancies in the dates provided. They can be a useful place to start from as long as you do your research!
