Yo, so I'm trying to remember there's a horse doll I used to love as a kid...let's see...uhm...here's a crappy MSpaint to see if you guys might recognize it...maybe the name had to do with dreams or stars? The horses were all magical looking and had more horselike anatomy, unlike MLP, which is more cartoonish.

That's not much to go on. Perhaps she was a Fashion Star Filly? They are colorful like MLP, but more realistic.
Maybe this site can help you: http://www.fashionstarfillies.com/

Thanks for the lead. Unfortunately, i don't think that's it. I think the head was just a teeny bit smaller, and there was more of a "magical" conotation to the horse than a "fashion" aspect. I think one fo the horses in the line was a unicorn, too.
if it helps, i'm a 90's child, so that's probably when it was out...

Was it hard plastic or soft? Barbie sized or smaller?

It was hard plastic and a little smaller than barbie size, I believe.
