One of my favorite dolls as a child was an Asian Barbie, maybe a Kira doll. I remember her being dressed in a zookeeper-like outfit with hiking boots, which I think were pink. She came with a hard plastic koala similar to the ones from the Animal Lovin' line. She is definitely not an Animal Lovin' doll though.
I think I got her between 1991 and 1995.

There have been a couple koalas apparently.
this set is from 2000

I don't remember her being part of a playset. She was just a stand alone doll.

Definitely not either of those, I'm afraid.
I don't remember much about her original outfit but I think she was wearing shorts. Boots looked like this (http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_570xN.169694946.jpg). I don't think she had a hat.
Almost positive she was a Kira doll.

I know you stated she was not from the "Animal Lovin' " line but there was an Asian doll name Nikki in that line of Animal Lovin'.

I definitely had that Nikki doll (I had all of the Animal Lovin' dolls except ken), but the doll I'm looking for does not have any leopard print clothing. She had shorts and I think she had a button up shirt like a zoo keeper or explorer would wear.

This is the only Kira doll I can find with those boots.. and they're in blue. :(

A different Kira/Asian that comes with a Koala during that same time period? Hmm, I don't think they made one... and the boots Animal Lovin' Nikki wears are the mold described, in pink, from what I can see in the pics of her on ebay.
Is it possible you are blending details from a few dolls into one? I have done that a few times when trying to find old barbies of mine, so I thought I'd ask :)
Also, is it possible it wasn't Barbie brand?
-
It was definitely Barbie brand. I might be confusing two dolls but I don't think so because I remember this doll pretty clearly because she was my absolute favorite. She was sent to me from my aunt that lived in Orlando, Fl.
Unfortunately those stupid boots are pretty common and aren't helping me find her.
-
Do you remember any details about the doll itself? Are you sure the outfit you are describing is her original outfit, and not a fashion?
I have a pretty good working knowledge of the dolls released around that time, and other than Animal Lovin', I really can't think of anything like what you are describing. Camp Barbie at least comes in somewhat outdoorsy shorts but there is no Asian in that line... All American Kira and Rollerblade Kira wear shorts, but they don't look like they will be tending to animals anytime soon :D

Another one but not Asian... ???

On an unrelated note that Barbie from nhtpirate1980 above is awesome..!!

agree! paleontologist barbie ftw!

If it was from Orlando, any chance it was something sold at one of the parks there? It would have had nice packaging but still been non-Mattel (most generic are either white dolls with blonde hair, the occasional brunette, and the black dolls - but if it was Disney or something the dolls might have been more diverse?)
