This mermaid was given to me by a friend who said she got it from a thrift store. So that is no help. She has absolutely no markings, so no help there either. She has no articulation.
UPDATE!!! I was informed by a stranger on Flickr that this mermaid came in a shampoo bottle and that there were other sea animals available! One step closer to an ID!
ID: Sea Critters Mermaid Shampoo

The following have been identified as "Mermaids" by "MTC" (Multi Toy Corp.)

I have that same red haired mermaid toy. If I remember correctly I think they were only sold at Toys R Us. That is the only place I remember seeing them for sale. I think I have the packaging around here somewhere. If I happen to come across it I'll post it. I do remember that the mermaid came in a plastic bag that had a blue "watery" window that you could see the mermaid in. There were many different styles. Including dark skinned ones. I also remember the other side of the bag had some anime like mermaids on it. They sort of looked like Marina from the Saban Little Mermaid cartoon.
-
Cool! Thanks for the information! I hope you can find her packaging! I love Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid! Do you happen to own any toys from it? I remember seeing some kind of toys when I was little but haven't found anything in my searches.
-
No, sorry I don't have any Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid toys.
-
That's ok. I just always have my eye out.
-
These mermaids are actually something I have been wondering about too. I have pictures of the ones I have below, and you'll notice how the head mold changes from the one with earrings to one without, which shares the same head mold as the girls in dresses that I've also posted. I don't know where any of them came from or how they are related, but I would love to.

I also have a different color variant of the mermaid holding the ball. I got her at a thrift store and don't have a clue where she is from, but like with the others, I would love to find out!

Thanks so much for the pictures zap! It's great just to see them again! I remember having both blue ones, but on separate occasions. I must have had two sets at different times. I'd really like to buy some of these mermaids if anyone has any or sale or knows where I can buy them.
-
I'll keep a look out for you! I run into them every now and again :)
-
Thanks! ^-^ Do you collect mermaids in particular? It seems like you do. If so, do you have an album of them I can look at? I love mermaids! :D
-
Found an image of some more of those mermaids on Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/photos/canker_canison/3645740706/sizes/l/
I just love these!
-
Wow, impressive sleuthing! I wonder how many of these there are going to be!
In regards to collecting mermaids... I collect just about everything 80s/90s toy, lol. I can't think of too many other mystery mermaids that I have- I have the Soma Mermaid Island dolls (except for one), lots of My Pretty Mermaid (loved these growing up), a few Merwees, and lots of Disney Little Mermaid pvcs and dolls. That's all that springs to mind, nothing as unusual as what we are talking about in this thread, and no album for them just now :P
Not a bad idea though!
-
Off-Topic:
I have toys from the Saban Mermaid cartoon! I don't think I have pics, though? I feel like I got them at the dollar store when I was younger. They're molded figures in squishy plastic. (you know, with the little hole in the bottom like a rubber ducky). I have one of the mermaid sitting on a rock. And one of the prince standing (kind of a bit of ground as the base). <3
-
oh my! I'm jealous of you zuse! Do you think you could take pictures? I would love to see them! And heck! If anyone else is reading this and collects mermaid toys I'd love to see them! ^-^ I've started a flickr and photobucket to host my collection pics if anyone wants to see.

and let me know if you start an album zap! ^-^

I'm away at school now, so no pictures. :(
Mermaid-wise when I was younger I had the Ariel Barbie doll and this one dollar store mermaid that was in a sitting (for a mermaid) pose. She had a peach shell bra painted on and a green tail that was a bit of a gel-like texture. She was blonde. I still have her and I think another one I found at a thrift store. Back when I was small she, Ariel, a cheap dollar store mermaid Barbie, and an old Sea Wees baby I had got to be sisters, haha.
Recently I got some more cartoon looking ones (small with colors like dark purple, orange, and magenta). They're by one of those cheap brands sold at grocery store chains. :)
-
I had that exact same blond/sitting one you are talking about I think! I want to find her again one day too. I believe she's a version of this mermaid: http://cgi.ebay.com/Pretty-Mermaid-Doll-Pink-Hair_W0QQitemZ230450793583QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a7f00c6f
It's so fun to hear about everyone's mermaids! :D

I used to have quite a few of these. I think they were all given away when we moved house when I was about 11, but I found the blue one with the curly hair a year or so ago in my attic. I sold her recently though. If anyone can find the make of these I'd love to know :) I'd like to see if I can start collecting them again, I remember there were quite a few.

I have that same mermaid doll! Mine is a blond though. I'll post a picture of her soon. I've seen those being sold as recently as 2004 or 2005. I got mine at a dollar store circa 1992 or 1993. It was one of the decorations for my mermaid themed birthday party.
I have the Tyco Ariel doll play set and all my mermaids lived there.
-
I had the Mermaid Island figures. I want to collect them again. I remember them being at ZCMI. I don't remember ever having the island. Maybe we thought it was just part of the packaging and threw it away. A set of them just sold on ebay but I have to save my money for some really expensive purchases I made. I also had two Sea Wee's that came from a thrift store and yard sale. Sorry, I'm sure my flickr wasn't much help EricaVee. I don't have many 90's mermaids. I have a ton of Ariel dolls and figures and stuff I still need to upload, but I've used up all of my upload space until the 1st. ugh. That is so annoying. Maybe I'll start uploading everything to photobucket.
Pikapal, what is the Tyco play set you are talking about?
-
I've been digging through my images files and here are a few I've saved off of eBay in the past and uploaded to photobucket:

I'll look and see if I have anymore. The ones that match yours are a bit hard to read, but I'm pretty sure they're Multi Toy Corps. (That's probably the search I was doing where they randomly popped up awhile back and I saved the pic because they looked cool!) The one with the babies is Tara Toys.
So, another MTC toy. Just like our beloved Little Beauties. Funny how this brand had so many beloved toys! :)
-
oh wow! Thanks a lot for the pictures! I don't remember mine coming in separate packages. And I definitely remember seeing them packaged together at Toys R Us. I absolutely love those photos though! I wish their name was something more distinctive though. Mermaid dolls simply named mermaids might be harder to find.
-
I definitely remember the mermaid with the blue tail and the crown, and the one with the pink tail next to her were on the plastic bag. Also the one with diving with the orange fin was on there too.
-
So then the first one and these "Pretty Poseables" were probably from the same company? I was actually thinking that the first one's head looked like it might be the same as the earringed pretty poseables. Now I'm pretty sure it is.
-
Wow! I just figured out that the doll that I posted with the same head mold but not a mermaid was MTC, and now Zuse has confirmed that the mermaids are as well!
Great... our beloved little dogs that are like the Little Beauties are probably called "Dogs" if this "Mermaids" line is any indication, lol.
-
We can add another style to the MTC Mermaids group!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/redreplicant/4461526330/
These are all so much fun! I hope I can actually collect some!
-
Wow, good find! And congrats! :)
-
Great... our beloved little dogs that are like the Little Beauties are probably called "Dogs" if this "Mermaids" line is any indication, lol.
Heh! I remember them having names (Trixie the Terrier?), so I think they probably put a little more effort into naming the line.
-
Pikapal, what is the Tyco play set you are talking about?
Oops sorry I forgot to reply to this part of the post. the tyco play set I'm talking about is Ariel's Undersea Hideaway
-
hmm.. Iunno what that is. Sounds neat though.
-
Found another pic of one of those MT mermaids. Scroll halfway down:
http://texaswatertowers.com/kayandlyn/miscellaneousdolls.html
The caption says she is dated 1991.
-
I've managed to dig up the picture of one of the mermaids I had. When we moved house I gave away all of them apart from this one, which I traded a few months ago.
apologies for the large pic, it's the one i used for the trade thread and the only one i took.
-
Thanks for the pictures you two! I hope I can find some for myself!
-
Saban Little Mermaid:
This isn't a figure, but it was something licensed from that cartoon.
I wish I could figure out the toy brand. That might help some for finding additional toys?
-
I actually just got the tea set that is in a similar box to that. The company is Paradise. ^-^ I'm hoping to get that dough maker too! I'm looking for ANYTHING from the cartoon. Let me know if you find anything else?

-
ohmygash! Thanks Erica! Plus I had a mermaid like the other one in the lot too! I hope I can win it so bad!
-
No problem, Batty :) Let us know if you win!
-
Found another mermaid doll saved on my computer. I think it was from the same time as those other ones I showed (it's a Barbie-sized one that I'm pretty sure was by MTC).
I like the box artwork way better than the actual doll, haha. And it seems to have the typical hair styling accessories that MTC toys came with...
-
Neat! Looks like MTC made a few different types of mermaids. I'm not too interested in these bigger sized ones, but I'd buy one if I came across one and she is pretty interesting.
-
Yeah, I wouldn't be too big on the Barbie sized ones either. They did a good job on the box artwork, though! :)
-
The unveiling... of my Saban Mermaids. :P

Thanks for posting those, Zuse! That reminded me that I have some of those Saban mermaid figures on their cards, so I went ahead and dug them out for a quick photo:
-
Cool! What's the brand name on the front? The logo in the bottom left corner?
-
D: I'm soo jealous! But so happy to get to at least see them! Thank you both so much! Loooove! Would either of you two mind if I used your pictures to put in my "WANTED" set on Flickr? I really love the shape of zuse's Marina's tail. And it's so cool to see Hedwig! What do the back of the cards look like Leah?
-
Sure, you can use my pics! :)
-
Thanks a bunch zuse. Would you like me to add any kind of link or something when I give you credit for the images?
-
Haha, don't worry about it. I'm guilty of "borrowing" pictures so it would be a bit hypocritical of me, heh.
-
Zuse ~ The manufacturer is "The Toy Group Inc." and the name of the line seems to simply be "Saban's Adventures of The Little Mermaid"...copyright is 1991 Saban International N.V., Saban Entertainment Inc. There's also a sticker on the back of the packaging saying they were distributed by F. W. Woolworth Co.
Batty ~ Yeah, sure you can use my photo if you'd like. :) The back of the packaging shows an image of each of the 4 figures in the line (these 3, and then the Marina sitting on a rock figure that Zuse has). I actually found these not too long ago at a local yard sale with a few other carded Disney Little Mermaid figures. I liked the artwork on the packaging, but I didn't know much about the series having never seen the show. I really only picked them up with the intent to trade or sell them, so I don't really have any personal attachment to them. My only difficulty in parting with them is that I've not been able to find much information on them to help me come up with pricing, so they're still just sitting around here for now (like all the other things I've picked up with the intention to sell yet never have, lol).
-
Well, I got mine at the dollar store. Apparently they didn't sell too well were I was living. Not that that helps with pricing, hehe.
-
Intention to sell!? ME ME!! Choose me! ohmygash! ME!
-
oh! And you also said trade. So.. what kind of things would you trade them for? I have quite a bit of Disney mermaid stuff if you are interested in her.. Should I be taking this to a PM instead of posting on here?
And if zuse or anyone else is interested in seeing some more Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid items, I have managed to snag a few things and have them up on my Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/battycollector/sets/72157623924699822/
-
Hi Batty! I'll go ahead and send you a PM here pretty soon.
-
By the way, thought I'd go ahead and show you all more of the MT Mermaids! I spotted one in a photo on flickr and asked the poster if she'd upload more images. Turns out she has a few of them. She said she might consider selling them to me, but hasn't replied in quite some time now, so I dunno where that stands, but they are such fun mermaids! here they are:
As you can see, the above mermaid shares the same body as the one I have, but different head mold and hair style. I really don't think they paid much attention to which heads went on which bodies.
And also! I came across one of the Barbie sized ones on ebay and forgot to bid. (ugh! I've been doing that so much lately!)
The winner won her for a mere 99 cents too. It was only a terrible photo, but here she is:
Before I wasn't too interested in these larger ones and I'm still not as interested in them as I am in the smaller ones, but now I do really like them and I would love to have at least one! DX
Their tails are lacking in fabric choice and fin design, but those ruffle things around their shoulders are pretty neat.
Anyway, I'm still on the lookout for these so lemme know if you spot any! ^-^

Small update on original post! Hooray!
-
I think I found a picture of the shampoo bottle with the mermaid inside it. It's from a magazine from 1999.
-
Oooh, great find pikapal!
That quiz is hysterical. ;D
You can buy this shampoo here, apparently! And they have a nice big picture of it. You can see clearly that it's the right mermaid!

-
Awesome! They've all been ID'd now! :D Thank you all so much! Now I want the one shown in the magazine! She looks like an alien mermaid! ha!
-
I've scanned over and over this post but can't find the name of the second mermaid you want identified (with the gold tail). She's not a MTC "Mermaids" as they all have moveable arms and tails. What series is she from so I can update the post and move it on? :)

Ah. Well I guess we don't have 100% solid proof yet. But someone did say that they got the same mermaid in a little baggie with the same artwork from the other "Mermaids" items. And she has the same head mold as some of the "pretty poseables" and is marked with MT
-
Zap18: I definitely had the second mermaid in the first picture -- the blonde one with a pink tail. My sister had a different one too, but I don't remember which one.
I also have the same mermaid holding the ball as you do. She came in a bottle of shampoo.
-
Hey everyone! I found some Mermaids fashions for 9 and 1/2" dolls and posted a livejournal about them as well as some more interesting information I've found about the non-poseable mermaids! :D I know I might be the only one that cares, but here's the journal entry:
http://battycollector.livejournal.com/2636.html
And here are the images of the fashions if you'd rather just look at them:

OH! And I also found another version of her:
I'm 100% sure that she is part of the Mermaids line by Multi Toys, but we still have no absolute official proof. So pikapal, would you have happened to come across the packaging you mentioned before?
-
I still haven't found it. :( I'll try looking for it some more.
-
So, do those fit the Ariel-sized dolls? :)
-
I still haven't found it. :( I'll try looking for it some more.
aw. Well I hope you find it. ^-^
So, do those fit the Ariel-sized dolls? :)
I think that's what their purpose is. To fit the Tyco Ariel's that were out around that time. hehe. I think they're super neat.
-
Ok found it! :D

So these are all IDed at long last?
-
Hooray! Thanks so much Pikapal! I'm excited to see all of the packaging for the Mermaids line. And thank you everyone else who helped ID everything! If anyone happens across any Mermaids items and thinks of me, please let me know about them. ^-^
-
Mermaids by MTC - everyone you have put up in the pictures I had lol.
They use to cost 99p each from the stand next to the till in toys r us and woolworths. My nan use to buy me and my sister one each time we went to town (if we were good lol).
But the packaging I don't remember there being a window to see the mermaids?hmm mind playing tricks maybe but I remember getting very upset the one time as we wern't allowed to open them till we get home and I opened mine to find out I already had that one.
Sadly they all went in the bin years ago. yes the bin lol I use to play with them in the bath and we had a bucket in the bathroom for all the bath toys and unfortunately they went a bit funny. tried cleaning them and it didnt really work so they went in the bin....along with the my little ponies i played with in the bath too. xxx
