On the back of the head it says Mattel Inc, but above that there is something etched that looks like E231. It is handmade, but I am not sure if it means anything?

It could be a prototype number. Where did you get the doll from?

Lots of my dolls have etching like that on their heads, it's usually in a place that gets rooted with hair so you can't see it. My new Monster High Coffin Bean Frankie has etchings on the back of her head. I think it's to mark the batch number or factory they came from.

Thanks Linkachu100 and Dludnerad. :) I got the Barbie from Value Village with some other dolls. I have never seen a hand etched number on a Barbie or other doll before.
