Title: Need help Identifying Mom's doll
Post by: bjnorvell on Friday 26 November 2010, 06:47 pm
My mom has a doll that she said she received around 1974 or 1976, it was the last doll her mom and dad ever bought her. I have looked at the doll and can't find any marks on her neck or anywhere else on the her period. She has a plastic head and hands, the rest of her body is stuffed clothed(body, arms, legs feet). All her facial features are painted on, she has freckles and she has light brown rooted hair with pigtails (the hair on top is short). She is wearing a bonnet and a dress like Holly Hobbie or Little House on the Prairie girls would wear. There are no tags on the clothing either, but there are 2 small metal buttons on the back to close it. I asked her if she was sure her mom didn't make it and she said no that it came out of a catalog but she wasn't sure if it was Aldens or Sears since they ordered from them mostly. Can you help me indentify her doll.
I have lightened the last 2 pictures to better she her, these were talking from a camera phone.

The doll isn't in any of those books or any of the others on the site I have been through all of them a few times to make sure I have looked over the doll. She is a really mystery as noone seems to know anything about her. The little girls on her dress remind me of a little holly hobbie but it isn't here.

Generally if a doll is pretty hard to identify it means she's a knockoff, off-brand, generic doll. That is, not made by any of the giant toy companies (Hasbro, Mattel, Kenner, etc) you may want to try the eBay doll message board. They are pretty good at IDing dolls that are earlier than the 80's. But in some cases you may be unable to "name" a generic doll, if that's what she is. Often they don't have names, they are just marketed under "Doll Assortment." Good luck!

I'm also going to throw out that her freckles and pigtails remind me of Anne of Green Gables. There are a million dolls of her (they're popular as Prince Edward Island souvenirs), so it might be hard to pin her down exactly if that's what she is.

She looks like she could be an old Knickerbocker doll. They made alot of dolls in the 70 's and they did have an Anne of Green Gables. I was unable to find a picture . They were bought out by Hasbro. Good Luck
