Title: Mer-Wees
Post by: Ghost Of The Doll on Friday 12 March 2010, 07:12 pm
Kebekah emailed me this doll description and image (left):

"Hello, I am inquiring about a doll from the late eighties to more likely the early nineties. This doll is a mermaid with a rainbow streak in her hair and she is around 3 inches. I called her Merwee but I am not sure if this was her name. She has CAP Toys on her back and she came with a purple bath set that stuck to the wall of your bathtub by suction cups. It would really help me greatly to be able to ID this doll since I had so many great times with her."
Thanks a bunch, Rebekah

UPDATE!!!
Thanks to Megan who emailed to confirm this doll is from a line called Mer-Wees, produced in 1997 by Cap Toys.

Thanks to Jennifer who emailed me this Mer-Wees advert with an image of the Rainbow Waterfall and Seashell Doll. This series doesn't seem to have been a big seller as I can't find anything about them on the internet!

I have posted a topic in the For Sale and Wanted section, but I thought it would be worth posting here too. I am desperately looking for these! They were one of my favorite toys when I was little and some of the last toys I remember buying as a child before I got "too old" for toys (ha!).  ;)

If anyone sees them for sale anywhere please let me know! I am interested in the dolls themselves rather than playsets without dolls, which are the only things I have seen come up for sale online.

Thank guys! :)

I have a few of these, so I thought I'd post them in here!  I wasn't sure the boy was one of them but I gather from the other conversation in your wanted post that he is, so I'm including him :)

Does Anyone Recall Having A Merwee With A Green Shell?
Title: Re: Mer-Wees
Post by: EricaVee on Saturday 17 April 2010, 01:13 am
I don't think either of mine were green--do you have any recollection of what "room" was in the shell? So far we've determined that there was a purple wedding playset, a blue or aqua restaurant/cafe, and the pink bedroom shown.

Well I Had My Aqua Green Bathroom Shell, But Was Just Wondering If They Did A Lime Green Or Any Other Green. If Only There Was A Picture Of The Box, Then Hopefully They Have A Picture Of The Whole Collection

Yes. I Remember The Tree Is A Lever. You Fill The Top Of The Waterfall And Pull The Lever When A Merwee Is On Top Of The Slide, And There Your Merwee Goes Sliding Down Into The Pool 8D (Doesnt Really Work Since The Tails Material Isnt All That Slippery 8P)

Am I wrong or did the other palm tree lever (missing from zappy's) pump the water up into the top?

It's ok. I THINK I remember it doing that.. I'm not sure though.. and it makes sense.

For some reason, every time I see that this thread has been updated I always think that someone's hit a goldmine and found every single playset, Merwee, and accessory in a big bag at a thrift store somewhere, or that they magically discovered their childhood collection hidden away in some corner of the basement and have just posted excitedly about it. I always brace myself for the barrage of awesome pictures and get ready to squee, but alas.  :(

Also, every time I go to my local thrift stores now I think, "Today's the day. Today I'm going to find that bag with all the Merwees."  ;D I haven't yet, but I totally will. And I'll post all the pictures and we'll be able to ID every set! Ahaha. One day.

I have some questions about the little sea creatures/brushes that they came with. In the wedding playset, did the groom count as the extra sea creature? And does anyone remember if the octopus came with that cafe playset in the picture? It's just that I don't remember them at all. And I think one of mine might have been the wedding playset, so if it didn't come with an extra sea creature and that might explain why I don't really remember them! But I do think I had the cafe so I would like to know if the octopus was part of it.

I'm actually thinking the animals were not brushes now.. (?) Good question.. I don't remember the wedding one having an animal, but there seems to be a lot I don't remember. Hopefully the picture will show once I get my boxed one! I don't know about the cafe one. I was thinking maybe there was a cafe, as well as a restaurant one, maybe? Because if there was then maybe the two are getting confused.
and zuse, I'll let you know why I find them so appealing.. just not now. I'm too tired to type it up and think it all through and word it perfectly. I've actually been thinking about it for a few days.. XD

You got a thing for tentacle-y baby heads with glamorous brushable hair, and those mermaid thingies that come with them.  I see it.  We're cool.  :P

I'm guessing that I don't remember the animals because they were strange-looking and I just wanted to play with the pretty little mermaids.  :D Must find merwees! Must play with them in bathtub..!

When is the boxed one coming, Batty?

I don't know when I'll have it. The tracking number only tells me that USPS was notified electronically by the seller to expect the package for mailing. So maybe that means it hasn't even been shipped yet.. or it just hasn't been getting tracked? Iunno..

Anyone think the last two images are big enough/good enough quality for Merwees to get their own page on Ghost of the Doll?
I thought it would be good to keep the images at this size so people can see them up close, but I can re-size them if they are too big.
As always, there are more pictures at my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/battycollector/sets/72157623669143952/

Alright! I'm finally going to buckle down and explain why I love Merwees so much! I'm sorry if it gets lengthy and boring!
Because I love mermaids (duh) although, with Merwees I must admit that when I was younger I was definitely turned off by the fact that their "fins" still look like feet when they are in mer-form.
Aside from the fact that they are mermaids I think their body/head size is really cute and  up close their faces are really pretty.
One of the main reasons why I love them so much is because of the world that they represent. I've always had a weird love for worlds that live on/in water or situations where things that wouldn't normally be in/near water are placed there. Examples: I love when the Titanic is sinking in the movie and part of the ship is underwater. Wouldn't it be so much fun to walk down the stairs and halfway down you are in water? Or in Home Alone when the basement is flooded. FUN! Merwees live in a world where that is the ordinary and that is a huge reason why I love them so much!
Done! That is why they are so appealing to me! :D

I want them to have their own page too, but I do know that Ghosty is really busy and there are lots of other things that still need added..
It looks like the blowfish does blow bubbles. You can see it better in this picture on my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/battycollector/4577236564/in/set-72157623669143952/
It's more clear on flickr because I auto adjusted the lighting.
Now there is the mystery of some of the Merwees in the Rainbow Waterfall picture and the one from that New Zealand auction. They are very different from any of the other merwees so I wonder if they are just random variations. It's possible that the unknown/variations in the Rainbow Waterfall picture were just prototypes for the photo. But that does not help with the Merwee from the NZ Auction. Did the Cafe come with either the AA or the white one? But if that were the case, why wouldn't they be the same merwee just different skin color?

@BattySparkles

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on Merwees!  That is an interesting concept indeed, and I'd probably have to agree!  I think my favorite thing of all is when there is a false "depth" created.  For example, when on a flat or slightly sloped surface, they paint on shore water to deep water.  Something about that was always so cool and imaginative to me!  ^.^  Especially when it looked believable.

So why do two of my Merwees have bridal veils?

Unless they change color very dramatically, they are not the same one...

I've been wondering about that too zappy. All I can think of is that they are variations.

Are they both white veils? The bedroom one has an aqua-colored veil for some reason.

They are both white. Here are zappy's pics:

The one on the right looks like she's the same as mine just with the "pants" paint rubbed off.
Title: Re: Mer-Wees
Post by: EricaVee on Thursday 06 May 2010, 04:06 am
Do they both still change color? As far as their tails go it looks like the right one IS missing her paint, but that doesn't explain their bras. Hmmmm. The bras didn't change color, right?
Title: Re: Mer-Wees
Post by: BattySparkles on Thursday 06 May 2010, 06:45 am
I'm pretty sure the part that changed color is rubbed off of the one on the right. That's what I meant when I said "pants" paint rubbed off. Only the pants changed color. Or rather turned see-through in warm water.

I would really like one of these, I wrote the initial inquiry, and I am still really interested in them. I was so happy when I saw the pic of the set with the waterfall. I had that exact one, and I was soo sad when my mom had to throw it away when it gathered mold :(

So, If anyone knows where I can get any Mer-Wees, please let me know

Thankyou :)

I also had someone offer to sell me the bedroom playset.. They're asking for way to much, so I'll see if I can get them to lower the price, if not I'll see if any of you would like to pay that much.

Also, did anyone on here win zappy's auction for Mr. Merwee? I didn't.
I also lost out on a lot that included this Merwee:
