Title: Non-Disney Animated Films
Post by: EmBee on Thursday 20 May 2010, 07:57 pm
Here you may share your favorite Non-Disney animated films from the 1980s and 1990s!
List them, discuss them, talk about the merchandise, whatever!

One of my favorite directors/animators is Don Bluth.  He did the following movies:

   The Small One (1978)
   Banjo the Woodpile Cat (1979)
   The Secret of NIMH
   An American Tail
   The Land Before Time
   All Dogs Go to Heaven
   Rock-A-Doodle
   Thumbelina
   A Troll in Central Park
   The Pebble and the Penguin
   Anastasia
   Titan A.E.

Thumbelina is my second favorite animated movie ever.   ;D

How about the Thief and the Cobbler? The preview was on my Anastasia VHS but I don't think that I ever got to see it! :o

That's one I haven't seen either!  It's by Richard Williams apparently.  I always remembered seeing the cover in a movie rental store but never renting it.  XD  I was one of those kids who wanted to watch a few movies 100 times.

This is the only merchandise I know of for the movie:

Yeah I remember enjoying Ferngully.  I never saw Cats Don't Dance or Once Upon A Forest!  Balto came on all the time and I liked it.  :3

@EdenEye
Toy Story totally confirmed my suspicions, lol.  XDD

I can't believe how many sequels were made. Balto has 3 movies. Anastasia had Bartok the Magnificient. Swan princess 3 total. American Tail made 2 more and a short lived tv show. Ferngully the sequel etc...

Sequels always irritated me. I hate the voice actors that *almost* sound like the original...

ooh ooh! One of my favorite non-Disney movies is "Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid" anime movie from the 70's. The animation is so beautiful and the story is a bit closer to the original. The whole movie is on youtube. I personally can't stand watching movies on the computer though. Here is a good fan made music video that kind of sums up the movie. The person did a really good job putting it together. It almost makes me cry! D:

The Last Unicorn, Secret of NIMH, All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Brave Little Toaster, The Flight of Dragons (haven't seen that in ages), Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer, The Adventures of Unico, and a few others mentioned here already.

What about Watership Down?  I was constantly demanding my family rent that when I was a kid.  So much so, that when a local rental store closed down here in my teens, my mom bought me the video as a joke, lol!  I still watch it...

With water ship down the movie is better than the book . The book is over 1,100 pages long although it is a children s book, and gets slow and boring for chapters . I would rather see the movie than read the book again.

The Adventures of Unico looks kinda neat, I had never heard of it.  I started reading Watership Down because I heard it was great, but I honestly did become uninterested enough to put it down for other books.  :\  I have the movie, but I was saving it til after I read the book.

Maybe I should just watch it.  >.>;;;

I disagree, I love the book! I've got the book, the mocvie and the TV series (which I never finished watching and didn't much like - it doesn't follow the same story as the book/movie) I got a Fiver beanie off the internet too and I have two different long stitch kits that I plan on completing someday!

There is a second book to watership down called Tales of Watership Down which is a series of short stories which isn't as good as Watership Down (sorta can't be compared because it's in a different format) but still enjoyable if you liked the series. I've also read Plague Dogs by Richard Adams of which there is also a cartoon but I've never seen it. That is pretty sad.

Oh that's interesting; I had no idea there was a sequel made!

Man, Plague Dogs (the movie) was very very sad.  I've never read the book, but the movie really makes you feel a sense of hopelessness.  :[

There are such interesting movies out there!

I like the second Unico movie as well, Unico in the Island of Magic. The robotic monster thing that chases Cheri and Unico around still scares me a little :)

I've also enjoyed Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, Little Nemo Adventures in Slumberland, Rock-a-doodle, My little Pony, Once Upon a Forest, The Ringing Bell (of Chirin) and the Miyasaki movies :)

I am also a Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer fan.  ;D

(and transformers and the secret of the sword! so many good movies)

Oh I love the Unico movies! I lucked out at a thrift store and found a video that had a bunch of cartoons/movies recorded on it including both of the English Unico movies. There are actually 2 other Unico films that never made it to the US. The very first was a pilot film called Black Cloud, White Feather. Afterward Adventures of Unico was released and then Island of Magic. Last was a short film called Saving Our Fragile Earth.
I've only seen the two English movies. I'd really love to get the other two, but neither was ever Dubbed in English. I wonder if I could find them fan subbed.

I have quite a few animated favorites.

The Swan Princess
FernGully: The Last Rainforest
Balto
The Last Unicorn
American Tail: Fievel Goes West (I have yet to see the original. I know, I'm terrible :P)
The Chipmunk Adventure
Once Upon A Forest
The Jetsons Movie
Care Bears 2: A New Generation and Care Bears Adventure in Wonderland
Daffy Duck's Quackbusters
The Prince of Egypt
The Land Before Time
The Pagemaster
Rock a Doodle
Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland.

A lot of these are nostalgic favorites for me, since my mother just happened to catch a few of them on tape while watching HBO or Showtime. I've since managed to track down a few on DVD and I couldn't be happier at the fact.

Out of the entire list I'd have to say Prince of Egypt is my most favorite, because it's in my opinion one of the last good American animated movies - that is to say, one of the last movies to focus solely on telling a story, and not on merchandising. It's hard to believe this is the same company that's now focusing on drowning itself in a computer animated ogrefest.  :(

Oh, and hello, everyone! Nice to meet you all :)

Omg I LOVED the Care Bears II! I watched it over and over every day and drove my parents nuts with it haha! I watched All Dogs Go To Heaven and The Land Before Time sometimes but they weren't really on the same list as the Care Bears. I also loved An American Tail: Feivel Goes West, and The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones if that counts lol

*Anastasia

*Thumbelina

*Swan Princess (this is my #1 fav, I love the movie and the merchandise)

*Prince of Eygpt (this one just squeezed onto the top)

The Princess and the Goblin -- don't really remember all that much about this one, I just remember I liked it a lot.  I have to watch it again.

The Pagemaster  -- saw this with my dad and my best friend in the theater so it brings back fond memories.

Going to have to second Thumbelina, A Troll in Central Park, Fern Gully and The Prince of Egypt.  I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting :)

Anyone else here find it odd that I had two Balto dog figures, but have never seen the movies?

I loved things like the wild thornberrys, snailberry tales and pocket dragons. Dunno if they're disney, and I know they're not films, but still.

I had David Copperfield and it was one of my favorites. :) And Spirit, and land before time. I had so many of the movies recorded off the telly, and I could never get enough of them. Still looking for the first one on DVD so I can see it again.

Anyone here ever see a film called On Christmas Eve? I loved that movie so much, and growing up, me n my mum would watch it every year around christmas. It was our own little tradition. :)

Hmm, well, I've always been big on animation, and while quite a few of my favourites are Disney, I still have quite a list:

Ferngully (as previously mentioned in this thread. Never seen the sequel though, and never will >.<)
Animalympics (Awesomely underrated film; I still have the vhs and love it to bits <3)
The Happy Prince (I guess this one counts as a short, but it, as well as the animated "Ghost of Canterville", left deep impressions on me as a child)
The Devil and Daniel Mouse (A tv film, but it my heart after the first 10 minutes lol)
Pound Puppies: The Legend of Big-Paw (I haven't seen it since I was 4, but MAN I loved that film! Sadly it was my cousins, and the tape broke thanks to my parents vcr... But I found a copy years later and gave it to her, boy was she happy lol)
Care Bears, the Movie II (It aired on tv here once, and I was in LOVE!)

And, that's all I can think of for now ^__^
