Sukiyo Dolls
« on: Friday 18 June 2010, 02:51 am »
I didn't know where to put this since I know the identity of the doll. I just spent $10 on a pink doll in a glass case with a hang tag reading Sukiyo Doll with some Japanese print. If its real, its my best investment in a thrift store find in a long time. It has a tag on the bottom of the doll that reads S 43. Does anybody here know anything about them?

I don't know anything about any of this but "Japanese" and "pink doll in a glass case" sounds appealing. Can I see what she looks like?

I have to go to the library today since I only work until noon and load pictures. She reminds me of a Pullip doll with an oversized head and a skinny body, except her bottom half is a dress molded over foam. She's huge too, I didn't measure but I think 18" tall in the least.

I was looking at one of those in a thrift store once, and a woman who was walking by stopped and mentioned that they had been really popular when she was a kid in the '70s. So... they're possibly from the '70s? Beyond that, I don't know anything about them, unfortunately!

EDIT: Oh! I just found out some info about these dolls (while looking for something completely different, haha)! They're known as "pose dolls," and there's several different brands of them. They were made in the '60s and '70s and seem to be pretty collectable. I didn't find your exact one, but I saw a bunch that had similar faces. Take a look at these Flickr pages:

Also, I found out that sukiyo (or suki yo) means something like "I love you" or "I like you" in Japanese. :)

Someone in my family had or maybe still has one of those Pullip dolls. I'd like to know more about them and see if family still has it.

We used to call those "dresser dolls"  - I assume because you'd get them when you were old enough to not ruin them by playing with them, but keep them on your dresser.   The quality of the ones in your photos look rather higher than the ones I had, however.
