Okay, there were these books. I guess there was some kind of magnetic code in these dots or something and this handheld device you had would read out the word to you. I think the books might have been spiral bound. This was late 80s and early 90s - I believe YEARS before all the LeapFrog gadgets out today. For some reason I'm thinking the gizmo/device might have been yellow? And maybe computer-mouse shaped?

I don't think so. The wand doesn't look right to me. Although I'm thinking it probably was just a buzzer thing, not actually reading. Hmm.

(I know there was a quiz toy out a few years that did that. My sister had one).

I know what you are talking about my little cousin had some of those books, but I don't remember the name of them.

Did this book include a puzzle that had a trail connected by dots that you had to drag over with the wand? And would the wand leave behind gray residue if you pressed it too hard.

I had one of these as a child in the early 90s. Mine was made of thick plastic and I believe it was by Texas Instruments. Certainly wasn't an 80s made toy.
I remember it making a really angry noise if you made the wrong choice with the pen. I also remember one of the parts being a big, blue round bit.

Does sound a lot like Questron?

Only, the wand I had looked like this except the body was blue and the end was yellow instead of orange.
