“If it’s Borden’s it’s got to be good!”
These illustrations by Walter Early are from Borden’s dairy adverts from 1939-1949. Borden’s produced condensed milk, ordinary milk, ice cream, cheese and mincemeat.
Elsie first appeared in their ads in 1936 in a more traditional style, but by 1940 she became a bipedal housewife complete with husband and daughter. A son followed in 1947.
There was a lot of text on each ad, involving Elsie the Cow explaining how wonderful their products were to the other characters in the picture. I’ve included one full page add and the rest are cropped to the top illustrations.
