“Scotland’s prince of whiskies.”

These illustrated ads for Chivas Regal whisky ran from 1958-60. The artists included Phil Hays, Herbert Danska, Antonio FrasconniSven Palmquist, Alfred D. Crim, and Harvey Woolhiser.

Each advert used a different artist, commissioned to create an interpretation of Robert the Bruce using various art forms.

[left] “This interpretation of Robert the Bruce, Scotland’s Prince of Warriors, a the Battle of Bannockburn, was painted especially for Chivas Regal by artis Phil Hays. It vividly reproduces the effect of mosaic – the art form of ancient Byzantium, later highly developed in Italy.”

[right] “The rich translucence of medieval cathedral windows was achieved by staining molten glass, an art process originating in the Near East in the 4th century. Herbert Danska was commissioned to paint this stained glass interpretation of Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn especially for The Chivas Regal Fine Arts Series.”

[left] “Intricate ornamentation jewelled with accents of gold, elaborate initials, and miniature illustrations brought the written word to glowing life in medieval illuminated manuscripts. This faithful illuminated page interpretation of Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn was commissioned especially for The Chivas Regal Fine Arts Series.”

[right] “Woodcuts – designs transferred from carved blocks of wood – require the eye of an artist, the hand of a craftsman. Antonio Frasconni, a foremost exponent of this ancient art form, has both. The strong simplicity that marks his work is evident in this woodcut of Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn, commissioned expressly for The Chivas Regal Fine Arts Series.”

[left] “From Sven Palmquist’s interpretation of Robert the Bruce, Orrefors of Sweden was commissioned to engrave this 12-inch crystal vase for The Chivas Regal Fine Arts Series.”

[right] “In this fifth presentation of The Chivas Regal Fine Arts Series, Alfred D. Crimi has interpreted Robert the Bruce, Scotland’s Prince of Warriors, through the art form of the fresco.”

“Bruce, Scotland’s Prince of Warriors, at the Battle of Bannockburn, painted for the Chivas Regal Fine Arts Series by Harvey Woolhiser. His canvas conveys the exciting rediscovery of lighting, perspective and movement that appeared in the 16th, or Golden Century, of Renaissance painting.”
