“The Nauga is ugly, but his vinyl hide is beautiful.”

Naugahyde is a vinyl upholstery material produced by UniRoyal since 1920. By the 1960’s there was fierce competition in the market, so concept of The Nauga was invented to help them stand out.

The Nauga was a mythical beast which shed its hide once a year and became so popular that 12″ dolls were also sold. There was also a 7 foot costume made for TV appearances, which almost suffocated the actor inside.

These adverts for Nauga vinyl are all from 1966-67.

Here’s the fantastic Nauga doll on a particularly unattractive chair!
