Title: Share your thrift store finds!
Post by: EricaVee on Friday 19 March 2010, 09:46 pm
I thought it would be fun to start a thread where people could report what toys they've gotten or just seen recently at thrift stores, yard sales, online venues, ect.  :) I know that I love to share a good find, and I think it would also be helpful to know what's out there.

Today at a local thrift store I got a pink Mattel bunny that I knew I'd seen online. It turned out to be one of the PJ Sparkles animals! Adorable. I've been really interested in PJ Sparkles since I started researching 80's and 90's toys online--I didn't have her as a kid (I was a child of the 90's) but I know I would have LOVED her if I did, and if I ever found her at a yard sale or something I would definitely get her. It's just something about that big, pink, plastic bow.  ;D

Ooh! Those PJ Sparkles plush are worth a bit of money, I think.

I find things all the time.. Old My Little Pony, Hugga Bunch, Strawberry shortcake stuff.. A couple of weeks ago, I actually found 2 My Child Dolls in their original outfits! Lat week it was 22 vintage MLP! (My FAVORITE!)

I couldn't even begin to list all the incredible finds I've had!  The two most recent big ones are a 36" Tenderheart bear for $3 and a vintage deluxe Strawberry Shortcake miniature.  Those were pretty darn exciting!

I have to agree on the pj sparkles- they are worth quite a bit.  I had one growing up and have found some since to keep, but I've sold off two extras, one for around $40 and one for around $70.  That was a great find!

Oh my. I just checked eBay and the cheapest one is listed for $84.99. O.O And it's also missing its little heart tag. The yellow bunny is going for $125!  Not bad for my first thrift store find. :D Thanks for letting me know, guys! <3

Hehe, I found a Starbrite Sparkles today.. Not as exciting as the bunny, but, hey she was only 99 cents and one I didn't have..
I think I have all the plastic dolls now..
I go thrifting a few times a weeks, so I've found tons of stuff. Though around here there's a lot less vintage and a lot more Disney plush.

er, lots of things. recently, on the top of my head: sea wee's, hollywoods, liddle kiddle doll, tons of care bears, yellow sparklin bunny (but she didnt sell for much of anything on ebay when i listed her!), my little ponies (vintage and new), vintage barbies and clothes, two vintage SSC dolls i forget who, other vintage dolls and clothing (tammy, pepper)

That sounds like great stuff! I really wish I could find more dolls around here. My local thrift stores seem to be really heavy on the stuffed animals.

That's how ours is, finding dolls is uncommon other then all those porcelain dolls from the 90's.. Blegh..
Mostly it's plush, which I don't really mind, but most of it is Disney plush. Tons of Disney plush and very little older stuff..
Oh well, makes it more exciting when you do find something!

I love to hear about good finds at cheap prices. I found my first MLP Bushwoolie at a flea market for 50 cents. My second MLP Bushwoolie I found at a yard sale for 10 cents! Both are in excellent condition. My best find ever.... so far.... a My Little Pony MIMIC at a church sale for 25 cents in excellent condition with original ribbon!

Found the Bluebird Cinderella castle today while actually looking for practical things.  :P It has no accessories but it's really pretty. I'm having fun trying to figure out how it work and all the little secret compartments, although I give myself another seven minutes before I go and look it up.

I wish my favorite thrift store wouldn't bag items, there's only ever one big $5 Barbie bag there and this time there was a fairytopia doll with lavender hair and eyes that I reeeeeally wanted mixed in with some Bratz and random dolls I didn't need. Wahhh.  :(

Edit: Yeah, it was more like one minute.  :P It turns out that it's not the standard Cinderella castle, it's pink see-through plastic instead, I don't know why they made the change but I think it's prettier. Hooray!

Went to my favorite flea market this week and it was only about half the regular vendors!  >:(

Wonder where in the world they all went? I bet there's a superawesome "made of nothing but win" flea market that I haven't heard of. It's top secret..

Instead of filling my car like I usually do (mostly with plush, not cool 80's stuff) we ended up with just a couple items.
Best thing being a Super Nintendo for $10. BUT, also got a pound puppy and a Frou Frou. Passed up a SSC rag doll because I didn't know if she was worth $5 without her clothes, BUT, looked her up at home and she goes for $15 without clothes cause it was Raspberry Tart.. Grr..  I knew I would kick myself for not buying her!
Also got one of those TNT mermaids. Was someone from here looking for one? It's got blond hair and a blue tail.

I have been on a ROLL lately.  I got the SSC Very Berry Home at a flea market (much bigger than I expected... fitting it in my toy displays is an unexpected but happy challenge), Mimic MLP from a flea market dealer who brought ponies for me and my sister to go through, and... drum roll... a Blythe doll.  I already had Mimic, so she went to a friend, and I don't collect Blythe or dolls of her style (even though she is pretty cool the way her eyes change color), so she is on ebay now.  To make me the moneyz.  To buy me more toys :P

Oh, and lots of smaller but pretty cool finds as well.  Hooray!

You lucky ducky! If you like Blythe you can always use the money you make to buy one of the cheaper newer ones!

Not a physical thrift store, but I won Lady Lovely Locks and Prince Strongheart very cheaply on ebay and they came today! They are the CUTEST dolls I have ever seen in my life and I'm so psyched to finally have them. I was born too late for the dolls and cartoon but as a child I had an LLL book first, and then a board game I got at a yard sale because I recognized the characters. I just loved the LLL girls, they were so pretty and a really memorable part of my childhood! It wasn't until later that I found out about the dolls and cartoon.

The only downside is that a few days after I bid on them, a lot of the same two dolls was posted--and these were for the same price in slightly better condition (my prince has a leg rash :-[) and with shoes. :( Ah well. It is still great to have them--perhaps I will find their shoes someday!

I have the same question about the local flea market. I find it strange than for the last two years there has been every thing else but toys up for sale .  It seems where I live the flea market has fewer vendors every year what is going on ?  ???

More people know about how collectible toys are and that they are quite easy to sell - especially in lots, on ebay.

WOW! Had a great Saturday yard sailing around my area! I got a whole bunch of CPK minis & SSC minis + 1 sea wee baby for 10 cents each!!! I also got a She-ra MERMISTA I needed + 5 other She-ra dolls for 10 cents each from the same person. They have hair cuts but oh well. Then I came upon a girl selling bunches of toy horses & she had G1 MY LITTLE PONIES for cheap! I got a seahorse & pink shell stand for 75 cents plus a Sparkler merry-go-round pony for 25 cents, both of which I needed for my collection. I bought all the rest of her G1 ponies for a quarter a piece to clean up & resell but one got snatched by someone else before I could pick it up. ERRR hate that...  OK I've rambled enough, but it was a good day for adding to my toy collections! WOOOHOOO!

I have had him for about a year or so, but I went to a Goodwill store and found an original Lots-A-Leggggggs.  He is in PERFECT condition.  He wasn't priced so the lady there let me have him for a whopping 25 cents.  Boo-yah!

Soon I will be back in my home state. I cannot WAIT to hit up my favorite flea market. Also, there is a Goodwill Clearance store that I used to hit nearly everyday after work in the one city I was at for about 10 months. I think they thought I was crazy. :-P You had a little bin on wheels with a garbage bag inside that you filled up. You paid for it by the pound (with a different rate for the books, obviously). All the items were on trays on wheels that were lined up in this warehouse store. Obviously, the majority of the place is clothing.

The trays were like these. Very jumbled and haphazard (but I LOVE that)

At the one I shopped at there were 3 rows of 6 (so a total of 18 blue carts) full of toys/plush/miscellaneous items. It would take me over an hour to look at it but it was a good way to unwind from my stressful day (and a lot cheaper than a lot of retail therapy can be!) I have the treasure-hunting gene so I liked never knowing what I'd find. They'd replace one whole row of the toys every day so I'd usually just try to go about every other day to see lots of new stuff. :)

I found lots of neat items there and kind of went on a eBay reselling kick to subsidize my collection. Lots of resellers beat me to things obviously, especially if I wasn't there when a cart was first wheeled out. But I still found TONS of awesome stuff, some of it obviously because most people didn't know what it was or that even the PARTS of broken things were valuable. That's how awesome this place was! I miss it! I'm going to try and go a few times this summer (hopefully it hasn't changed too much in a year!)

I also found 2 newbord Quints in a bag with some oodles, quints and vintage my little pony accessories for just $2.99. I also found a Princess Dear Diary!

Well, not thrift store finds, but I did have pretty good luck finding vintage toys at yard sales this last weekend.  My finds included:

-a great condition Ice Tickle Bear with a pink belly
-2 Nosy Bears (Hotrod & Funsy)
-a couple of Rainbow Brite items (9" Patty O' Green doll & plush yellow Hatfull Sprite, Spark)
-plush Zummi Gummi Bear
-Enchanted Kingdom princess doll, Guinevere
-a She-Ra and two Masters of the Universe figures
-a bunch of Cabbage Patch dolls (Splashin' Kid, Growing Hair one, etc.)
-2 Keypers (Poke & plush Tango)
-early 80s McDonald's playset for Barbie
-1960s rooted-hair troll

Thanks so much for letting me share!

Princess Dear Diary is an electronic organizer from the 90's I had one. :) And there were different ones made. My cam cannot take good close up pictures so here is a different one I found on the net. I wanted to start a forum about these so people could post pics of different ones.

Today I went to a new thrift store I'd never been in before! (I never did find the one I was looking for, haha!)

I didn't find anything too exciting, but it was really cheap (just a few dollars)

-The Guava ragdoll that someone was looking for (super cheap)
-A Chubbles (no patch)
-An American Greetings Care Bears stamper (I used to LOVE these)
-A mini Pillow People from 1985 (Footsteps character, I believe)

Okay...I've been watching this thread and sighing that I never seem to find toys or dolls with the exception of a few abused Barbies and the CBC Cozy Heart Penguin. So I was long overdue for a find, right? Cause I hit the jackpot today at Goodwill!

FOUR CABBAGE PATCH KIDS. They need a light cleaning, but they have their original clothing minus shoes and are in beautiful shape without pulls or tears and nice fingers and toes. Also they have the diapers! That surprised me the most. Three of them I'm keeping, but the fourth will be finding a good home. (PM if interested in buy/trade)

I'll grab photos of them tomorrow before their spa treatments. I was dancing around for the rest of my shopping after finally hitting a good find! :D

I'm going to sound ignorant...  but I didn't know that Cabbage Patch dolls were that collectible? I knew they were big back in the day but I don't know enough about the eras to know which dolls are valuable?

Im not sure whats collectible or not I just know what I love to collect. Anything I find adorable and anytime I remember enjoying in childhood. I think Cabbage Patch Kids are very cute. I found one the other day. Perfectly clean with dress but no diaper.

Cool! I have a football jersey somewhere for one! I just don't have room to collect some of the larger dolls!

(I'm more of a PVC figure girl myself!) :D

Really I'm just curious because the thrift stores always have naked dirty Cabbage Patch dolls marked for, like, $6 and most other toys are $1. So I'm just curious what they *think* that they have...
Title: Re: Share your thrift store finds!

Cabbage Patch Kids are still fairly popular with collectors, but they're not an expensive doll. I mean, I'll be selling my extra guy for $8 to $12. You're not going to get rich on them, which is one reason they're highly collectiable. They're like the second most common doll to find secondhand, I think. So there's a ton of them on the market. I'm just thrilled to find something I actually collect! LOL. I have two of the 25th Anniversary kids from last year. And now I have three more of the actual vintage ones! :D

Zuse, if you want to try to resell them, you might be able to get $8 to $15, depending on condition of hair, how clean, body condition, and if they have their original clothing. But $6 for a naked, dirty CPK is too high unless they KNOW they're a Jesmar or rare head mold. For average? Not worth it unless you like the doll herself for your own collection.

There are lots of Cabbage Patch Kids in good condition at my favorite thrift store, WordFuzion--you should swing by if you're ever in MA! Glad you had a burst of thrifting karma  :)

There haven't been any good toys in my area lately. My favorite store's toy section was INVADED by styling heads for a while, though. I thought that was totally bizarre--every time I came by they had doubled. O.O Scary. The only interesting thing was that there were THREE Fisher Price Dream Dollhouses there the other day. I had one as a kid and it's just not the same looking at pictures online, I had to look at one in person (and bend down to the eye level of my five-year-old self) to really remember what they were like!

At an op-shop I went to teh other day they had a grubby naked boy cabbage patch for $19.99 Au and a grubbier one for $15. I was like WHAT? Just because it's recogniseable doesn't mean people want to pay more for it - especially if they can get a nice new clean one with clothes from the shop or from ebay for not a great deal more. Australian op-shops are pretty expensive though.

Wow that is quite the load!  Congratulations.  ^o^

The Li'l Miss doll is cute.  I also really like the Keypers swan.  I don't know anything about that line, I should look at it on GOTD sometime.

>.>  I wish they would just throw away the obviously ugly carnival toys.  They take up so much space in my thrift stores, so looking through the plushes is discouragingly hard.  :(  I'd love to leave with a load like this!  :D

When I buy toys I wonder what people think.  =)

Ha! Em I know what you mean. Actually, even though I love going through thift stores and garage sales and flea markets --- I must admit I am extremely embarassed to do it. Especially if I see someone I know there! I'm always watching my back....lol. Everyone asks me where I buy my Diesel jeans and nice tops. LOL, I tell them that my mom buys them for me. :) Yes and when I bring a load of toys in a basket up to the cash register, I feel a bit awkward. But I always think...well I don't know these people and they don't know me. So I don't care if I look like a complete dork!

Honestly, I wish they would donate the cheapy carnival plushies to the Humane Society so the dogs can chew on them. However, the people who work there probably don't have a clue what is a cheapy and what isn't. Except for obvious well-known toys like Care Bears. The people who work there must be really clueless since about a month ago I found a plastic bag stuffed with 5 webkinz still with their tags on for $2.99!!! And 3 of those webkinz were retired! LOL. But hey, how can we expect everyone to know right? I have NO friends in my personal life that have any interest in vintage toys. So they no nothing about them either.

Blah Blah Blah....I talk too much.

Sometimes I'm embarrased to walk around the store with toys, but I live in an urban area so there are always much weirder people hanging around in thrift stores. I guess you can always pretend you're shopping for a child you know.

That MLP is one of the two I have from my childhood! The bow one! And that keypers swan is so pretty.

Score! I spent too much (about $20) but I couldn't pass it up, haha. I brought my sister along. Poor thing, I think she's my new good luck charm!

I thought the Ferris Wheel might be FP, but I haven't found it yet. The tape is "Rainbow Brite and the Big Color Mix-Up."

I only got the ponies in good shape. I left a few G3, Tara fakies, and Happy Meal ones. Well, someone colored the "P" on a few of the magnet covers... grr. I love the Lady Pony fakie as well.

I'm not attached to anything, so I will hear offers! :)
(Ok, I'm keeping the Sonic Wacky Pack dog. But OTHER than that).

Wow, so many neat finds lately...congrats! :)

And Zuse, your ferris wheel is from a Disneyland playset by Playmates.  I had the set as a kid, and always thought it was really neat.  Here's a pic I saved of the box some time ago from an eBay auction:

and a pic of the set loose as well:

Hope that helps you out a little.  Again, what a great haul...have fun styling MLP hair! ;)

@EdenEye
I used to be super embarrassed too.  The worst case scenario I can imagine is running into someone I know, but I'd probably play it tough like "Yeah I like these toys, so?!"  (Well, actually I'm pretty timid ._..)  The only other bad thing is being side-by-side with a 9-year-old girl and being as legitimately interested in the toys as she is.  They notice it.  o.o

But other than that no one else really seems to care thankfully!  I really shouldn't be ashamed of it at all, though; and neither should you!  Getting that feeling off your back is very liberating.  Just remember: you'll probably never see those people again, nor will they remember you!!

I'd guess animal shelters don't bother with it because of the stuffing clean up.  Or swallowing eyeballs or something dumb like that.  But I completely see your point!  Speaking of clueless workers, sometimes my thrift stores get a little self-righteous and overcharge stupid things like crazy!  Like $8 - $14 for a vintage Garfield plush.. hello??  No thank you.

I don't have any friends around here that I can relate to with toys either.  I think we're in a pretty small niche.  XD  A happy one though!!  Okay, I win the long-winded award.

@EricaVee
Yeah, that's always a great alibi.  :D  "Oh this?  I have this niece who... "  xDD.

Today at one of the thrift stores I visited I thought I saw a girl from my high school right when I was digging into the plushie bin (and had just found a Yum-Yums). Haha. It's been a few years (Class of '04) but I totally hid behind a shelf and went over to browse the kitchenwares for a few minutes. I don't get back to my hometown much so I totally forget I still KNOW people here, eep! Hate to ruin my rep. ;)

Turned out it wasn't her, though. Haha.

It's really cute. Turns out I have a Huey figure that I got a long time ago. I didn't know what he went to.

There's also a modern version of this that is more Polly Pocket sized. It always does really well on eBay. I thought this reminded me of something (you could tell that there was something that turned the gear that turns the ferris wheel).

I'll be able to take some pictures on Monday :)

They're called Fluffy Surprise. There are also smaller ones which are rings, hair clips and others. The bigger ones (pictured) have purple rings which can be clipped onto things, and have a hole underneath them were you can store the mini ones.
They seem to be near impossible to find, so I've put that sig up in case someone has some; I'm willing to pay a fair amount for them :)

A Bartok (from Anastasia) plush for 75 cents
A Small 101 Dalmatian Plush (I think it's Lucky) for 50 cents
A GREAT condition Beethoven with the tag still on the collar from 1993 for $1
and A Wonder Whim Owl! So adorable! Again for $1

I also found a giant giraffe plush for $5 and I was so excited!
Haha I feel like I've finally had a good couple of days thrifting! :)

Well I don't go thrifting as much as I'd like to, but here are some things I found recently

First thrift store:
Caboodle- I was ecstatic when I spotted this thing! I'm in love with clear plastic with glitter in it. This reminds me of an old Lady Lovely Locks lunch box I once had. Plus, I really needed somewhere to put my ever growing glitter eyeliner and fingernail polish collection.
Strawberry Shortcake jar- Not something too special, but I'm not one to pass up a vintage SSC item.
Second thrift store:
Dic Wizard of Oz cartoon series VHS- coincidentally I had recently re-discovered this cartoon and was planning on finding the episodes. Can't wait to get the rest of the series.
Sky Dancers DVD- another coincidental find since recently I had been trying to find this series as well.
Princess Toadstool pin- So cute! I love vintage Princess Toadstool (Her name is NOT! freakin Peach! Ugh) items. According to the internet it's rare.
And here's a closeup of the Princess Toadstool pin

Actually I just learned that in Japan her name was originally P?chi-hime (Princess Peach) but she was introduced to me as Princess Toadstool so I've always preferred that.

Got a vintage kenner care bear and a mini vintage kenner care bear. For 79 cents and 49 cents respectively. Both in pretty good condition.

Got a large Fur Real cat in a bag of stuffed animals for $3. (I picked out the animals, haha) so I probably paid 25 cents for her, when I know she retails for about $80.
In the previous mentioned grab bag I also got a vintage Pound Puppy and Purry, a Copper plush (from Fox and the Hound), a baby Furby and the purple cat in the Purr-tenders line. A couple other miscellaneous plush as well, but those are the ones worth mentioning. :)

I just found a MLP baby sea horse floaty for $.05.  I needed that for my poor sea ponies that lay on their sides hehe.

A few weeks ago I found many LLL outfits and pixietails.  Probably there was about 5 outfits/fashions and 10 pixietails for $2.00 for each outfit (each outfit came with some pixietails).  I also found silky pup too and I've washed her up and she is silky again.  She was looking like she might not work out since all her hair on her back was a wadded mess.

(Hi! I'm new here.)

Someone should revive this thread and it shall be me hehe.  I like this thread a lot.  Y'all have found so many good things.  I had a Super Magic Diary too.  They are cool.  My sister had one too.  My brother locked himself in my room when he was 2 or so, got out my nail polish and painted the top of it.  I was so mad lol.

You could always also pretend you're simply shopping for your ebay business or whatever in your head if you're embarrassed lol.  Which for a lot of you, is somewhat true.  I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of, but I get embarrassed sometimes too but I think it's more I don't like people looking at me when I shop in general.

Okay well I just started getting into thrift shopping so here are my finds so far:  A ton of Mcdonalds mlp's, 3 G3's, a popcorn prettie doll (flea market), Party Popple (thrift), Baywatch Barbie w/ dolphin unused (the box was gone but she and the dolphin were still attached to the back of the box), Breyer Horse Hope I think her name is for $2 at a flea market, Vintage Birthday Care Bear cake pan @ flea market, The Hobbit LOTR record (thrift), '94 mcdonald cabbage patch doll MIB (thrift), Cabbage Patch pony fakie (purple) (thrift), Wendy Doll (flea market), Toy Story Slinky Dog (thrift).  Slinky is a bit messed up but good enough, Gloe Bear (I love those things), bigger version of beanie baby Mystic (thrift).  I don't remember the prices of everything but I got everything for good prices.

Things I've seen but didn't buy:  A bunch of Neopets plushies, Webkinz, Webkinz pen case, literally a ton of bins full of mcdonalds toys at this one flea market mostly all MIB, tons of older barbies in good condition but none I wanted, Whole set of Hunchback of Notre Dame dolls (like barbies), two Barbie houses 2.99 each at a thrift shop, Vintage Wonder Horse (it's a rocking horse) 14.99, CP pony fakie in white, vintage smurf plush, vintage pizza hut puppet muppets toys, a ton of other vintage cake pans including Cabbage Patch, Lots of Mcdonalds glasses, Care Bears Case (it was overpriced imo), vintage Mickey flash light that changes colors, vintage Mickey backpack, Baby All Gone (her hair was in poor condition though).  Um yeah, I can't think of anything else! I'll be sure to share more in the future :)

Edit:  Apparently that G3 pony I got on Saturday for 50 cents is worth 20-25 dollars since she's pretty rare.  It's Royal Beauty #2 with the Frog Prince symbol.  I thought that was pretty cool.

Wow you found a lot of stuff Cherry Chip!   :o  I have a problem with my thrift store being overpriced too.  For example if they have a pair of nice shoes in good condition they ask for up to $12.98.  FOR USED SHOES!!!

I had Baywatch Barbie when I was young.  Anyway, nice finds!

Thanks :) I actually didn't have Baywatch Barbie when I was young but I love dolphins and the look of the older barbie dolls so she was a good find.

Haha in addition to a LOT of other plushies I found:
vintage pound purry
vintage large pound puppy (14" maybe?)
kitty kitty kitten
and a PUPPY PUPPY PUPPY (both have the their tush tags removed, you can still see part of the puppies, buth both have their collar-for cat, and neck bandana - for dog!) the kitten is pretty dirty but im hoping to clean her up

I ALSO FOUND: A mommy puppy surprise with 3 babies inside! for 25 cents! It is like my grail find, I LOVE Puppy surprise :) SO I was super excited.

Like I said, a bunch of other plushies too, but they're not necessarily collector things so I won't post them here. :)

Since I collect plush, I often fill my buggy or cart with tons of stuffed toys.  I have had the cashier on more than one occasion at more than one thrift store say something like "oh, how many kids do you have?"  Sometimes I play along and say something crazy like 15 haha (I'm 28 years old and have no kids).  I think it's also funny when I say "none.... why?" and look at them puzzled as to why they would think that.  My thrift stores sometimes have some great finds.  I bought a bag of plush that had old and new Care Bears, some World Wildlife dolls from Wendy's from the 1980's (I remember having them as a child).... and, I also got a Steiff Penguin- it's newer, but appears to be worth at least 20 bucks.  Debating about keeping him or selling him.  I often get good stuff- I especially love Disney plush, and my greatest Disney find was a large Dodger stuffed animal with the "necktie" and tags still intact for about 4 bucks!!!  Dolls are definitely harder to find, but I love my plush more than dolls, so I'm not complaining LOL.

I went out thrifting yesterday and Friday. I didn't have much luck on Saturday (there was a sprite that had obviously been a dog toy... and a Gonga plush that had one really chewed up hand), but Friday was good! I picked up a vintage Friend Bear plush, a couple of vintage littlest pet shop animals, two really cute Holly Hobbie mugs, a treasure troll, a couple of old science text books from the 1950s & 1960s (they looked cool!), and some other toys. :)

I generally write about my thrift finds on my blog. ^^ This weekend's finds aren't up there yet, but I'll have pictures up by Monday. If you have a moment, please stop by!

Had  a horrible day at the flea market almost no toys mostly fast food toys and lots of todler toys. The only good find was a keyper I got for 25 cents. The keyper is baby little league and no accessories just the toy. If any one here wants the keyper PM me.

I also found a legend of Zelda horse . I found Gandorf 's horse but not him and it is the 2009 version. It was lose and only worth about 10 dollars if it was mint on card It would be worth 100 dollars.

Other than that some one had two nude strawberry short cake dolls not clothes pets ect wanted 2 dollars each for them who are they kidding. A few barbies all lose no clothes , a whole bag of them 12 dollars to much for a bunch of nude dolls. I should have taken a picture for you guys oh well.

went to the salvo the other day and saw two popple plush but passed them up i do not collect them.  The toy section is dismal there, other than that i went to a curch sale and fund five vintage fisher price circus animals for 75 cents.  ;D i also found a digimon figure missing a foot and an arm for $1.00 and it also had a yu gi oh dragon toy and a wolf that turned out to be a modern GI Joe toy. if anyone is interested i am selling the vintage fisher price pm me or email with your offer.

I think the hollow my little ponies are made as cake toppers or as lolly bag (loot bag) fillers and they are licensed (so not fakies - just cheap official merchandise!)

So this is my loot for Oct 6th o_O haha. It's .. quite a lot. I estimate 60-70 plushies in all. Some of them are very small though. I also have a few other toys that aren't pictures, a small pikachu, a polly pocket (missing pieces though) and a few other ones.

Well, I go to second hand shops and bootfairs and jumble sales quite often. My most recent finds are

A big yelloww smiley thing that I did think was a jelly baby, but now I'm not so sure. He was a pound. In that same shop I also found a cow and gate cow.

A snow white dwarf. Not sure which one. Think he was a pound too.

A M and S owl for either 20p or 50p.

A white voodoo doll in a pink outfit in the pound shop.

And two baby SF warthogs for 40p all together.

I also found a couple of Wade figurines for my friend, who does auctions. She bought two of the three, but the third was chipped. It broke my heart to think of leaving him there, so I bought him and brought him home. He's sitting on my windowsill now. He was only 30p.

I go to secondhand shops and boot fairs/jumble sales quite a lot, coz my parents love them too, so I'll probs be posting here a lot. Hope that's ok?

There was a he man play set for castle grey skull but it was missing a ton of parts , covered in dust, modly stickers and broken parts too . I did not even want to ask about the pricing for the play set so I left it behind.

Not that I plan to actively seek out these and collect these, but I couldn't resist.  I found My Little Pony Sugar Sweet for 40 cents today.  She's got the 40 cents written on her in Sharpie (it's what this thrift store does, but I've gotten their Sharpie price off a Cabbage Patch Kid's neck, so this can't be much different), a sticky green mess on the side of her neck, a blue paint streak on her horn, and her hair needs to be restyled into ringlets.  Amazing though that the symbols and eyes are perfect, no marks.  I'm up for the challenge.

She still has the scent though.  Cool!

I still have my My Little Ponies from being a kid.  Most were baby ponies or Summer Wings.  I only had 2 adult ponies, and they came from the Party Pack gift set.

Sure, no problem.
Sugar Sweet before (the blue paint was on the front of her face and horn; didn't get a picture, but was really easy to scratch off with my fingernail):

Sugar Sweet after:

Her left side still has some smudging from the Sharpie (when I washed it off, a bit got on the washcloth and stained a small part of her front right leg and still has some faint traces of it under her symbol).  Can't seem to get it off.  I think her hair turned out well though.  I didn't realize that they ever did ringlets on My Little Ponies until I went to ID this one on Dream Valley.

I was able to get to the salvation army store near my home town the bad news is that they got rid of their toy section and now only have a few crates on the floor . I am afraid that they will not longer have toys any more . I did manage to find one toy it it was 69  cents but she is missing all of her parts but I am happy I finale found some thing for once. Next door at the antique store there was a nosy bear but they wanted five dollars for it and it needed a bath.

I found a My Child doll at a thrift store on Thursday, December 6th!  This is my 15th My Child doll, and it's my favorite outfit!

She was $2.12.

Picture before restoration:

Picture after restoration:

The bear was still attached to her hand, and the outfit was complete.  The bears get lost easily, so it's wonderful to find the bear!  The bear's worth about as much as the outfit is without the bear.

Oh, wow! What were the steps that you took to make this transformation happen. I'm especially interested in how you fixed her hair! She looks awesome! :D
Title: Re: Share your thrift store finds!
Post by: luckdragon on Tuesday 11 December 2012, 08:54 pm
I soaked her outfit (everything but her diaper and bear) in water with a bit of detergent and Borax overnight.  Then, I spot treated the stains on the bib and the front bit of the sleeper.  I had to do a little bit of bleaching on the bib to get the stains out (the bear on the bib is not faded, it was cloudy the day I took the after shot, and the camera flash reflected off the bear).

For the doll, I used baby shampoo on her hair after cutting the weird hair ties out that a child had put in (the hair was severely tangled around them).   After washing with the baby shampoo, I put some conditioner in and left it five minutes before rinsing it out.  Her body was clean because the outfit had never been removed, so just her face and hands needed cleaning.  For that, I used a wash cloth, wet with some baby shampoo and then rinsed the face under the sink.  I used the part of the wash cloth without soap to rinse the hands (they barely needed it).

I set her aside to dry and spot cleaned the bear with the wash cloth with baby shampoo and set it aside to dry.

Once she was mostly dry, I blow dried her hair and combed with a dog brush from the dollar store (pin type, not the one I use on my actual dog).  Pin type dog brushes are excellent with doll hair.  When I did that, I discovered her part was fully intact as were the bangs' part.  I pulled the bangs forward, brushed the hair back into pigtails, and secured with hair ties, then tied ribbons in them.

For the makeup, I used Prisma colored pencils and just touched it up.

This doll had severe facial sagging, so I took a needle and thread and gave her a face lift from one ear to the next, all the way across the hair line, using blind stitch.  Then, I did a chin tuck along her neck with blind stitching to pull the skin tight.

I then cut a new ribbon for the bear and tied it over its old ribbon to protect it from further fraying.

This was my first time doing a face lift on one (4th time doing a chin tuck).  It was one of the simplest, if not the simplest hair redos I've done.  I was surprised that the bangs were even still separate.  Reweaving this hair style isn't too bad though, I'd rather do it than say a curly piggies or a V-part *shudders*.

Went to a thrift store today.  This store bags random toys together, and I found a bag with the following inside:

-Minnie Mouse rubbery bank (about 5 inches tall) - looks like it's from the 1970s
-1974 Wolfpit Pocket Doll.  It was this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1974-Wolfpit-Pocket-Doll-6-Tall-Yellow-Hair-Free-Shipping-/121061720173?pt=US_Dolls_Bears_Toys&hash=item1c2fd7406d
Missing 1 eye, but that will be easy to fix.
-Strawberry Shortcake Apple Dumpling (missing hat, 1 sock, and turtle, but I have my childhood one that's complete)
-Strawberry Shortcake Lemon Meringue (complete!)  I didn't have Lemon Meringue when I was little.
-Kindles doll Gleami (tried a battery in her, and she works)
-Kindles doll Lady of the Light (not sure if she works because I can't figure out which way the battery goes and which position the switch should go in)
-1985 Ramona Reindeer from Burger King
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NWT-Vintage-1986-Hallmark-Cards-Christmas-Ramona-Reindeer-Plush-Doll-5-/360591883673?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53f4f37d99
I have at least 2 Ramonas...maybe 3.  I buy them almost every time I see them because I collect Hallmark Keepsake ornaments, and Ramona is a Hallmark character.

Very successful bag.  Donating the bank (the bank had a cute little Happy birthday pin inside it, aww), keeping the rest.  I loved Strawberry Shortcake as a kid, and if I ever have children, I would like to pass them along.  The Kindles, I didn't have or really know about, but the dolls are quite pretty, especially the Lady of the Light.  I'll probably give the Pocket doll to my mom because she's got a few Holly Hobbies, and it reminds me of them.

I saw 3 Pound Purries and 1 Pound Puppy there too.  Didn't buy them (even though they were like 40 cents a piece).  I try to avoid stuffed animals because of the dust factor.

Oh!  The bag costs *drum roll* $3.13!  I think I scored quite the bargain!

Edit:  Lady of the Light works!  I wasn't pressing the switch hard enough.

Yesterday I found a vintage Nickelodeon Talk Blaster phone in the box, still mostly wrapped, with all its cords. I was going to repaint it for an art project since it's a weird shape, but they seem to be going for $30 without cords, $50 with cords... so maybe I'll sell it. Or just keep it.

Hi have not found much lately. The Ronald MC Donald's house charity had a sale last week there was not much in the toy section it was pretty barren. Tons of Tomas the train stuff , Barbies, troll dolls puzzles ect The only thing vintage I found was a crystal swift wind that has turned a nice shade of yellow, and a Light up polly pocket that no longer works . I will post photos of them latter.

That's an interesting horse.

I found a bag of My Little Ponies and two fakies.  Plus a purple Tonka unicorn.  I'll pop that into the ID section. Edit:  IDed by a member:  the unicorn is a Littlest Pet Shop McDonald's toy.

In the bag:
1998 Scootaloo McDonald's toy  She's quite cute:

Year 8 G1 Raincurl
Year 8 G1 Streaky
Year 7 G1 Wild Flower (Sweetheart Sister)

The bag they were in was $3.13.

The manes and tails of the Y8 ones may have been trimmed since they seem short for ponies that have ringlets.  I'll try to restore them and probably won't set them in ringlets.  The Y7 pony is missing her earring and has a few tiny chew marks on her ear and one foot.  But, still nice.

That is crystal swift wind minus her saddle and wings. I have no idea why a lot of them turn a yellow/amber color  with age . I have another one that is still pink since I keep it out of the sun light.

It's Figment!  I'm tempted to buy the Figment ornament from the Disney Store website, but I'm waiting until their sketchbook ornament line is up (by the end of next month).

Nice finds!

Not really a thrift store find, but I went to the newspaper's annual Ultimate Yard Sale.  It's where people can buy booths (parking spaces in the newspaper's parking lot) to hold their own yard sales.  It's an annual event.  Cost $1 to go in, and the sellers pay for a "booth."  Money goes to a charity for education.

Anyway, I bought a bag of Quints.  It had:
Quints with bunting (blonde).  Complete with bottle and bunting, all five dolls present
Thirsty Quints (blonde).  Complete with bottle, bottle warmer, all five dolls, and 2-3 of the hair clips (I can't remember right now)
Drink 'n Wet Quints blonde (just the #3 girl and #5 girl)
Meal Time for Five (complete, little damage on the arm of one side, but I had this set as a kid and mine's intact)
Summer Fun fashion set (missing #3's hat and all of the shovels)
Sunshine Family baby
Barbie baby
random doll I don't recognize.

The bag was $8.

Wow! Everyone here is so lucky. I haven't had luck like that.
I was able to find a Hello Kitty beach tote from 2003. It has vivid markings on it that I can't remove, but considering the prices Hello kitty items from over ten years ago go for... I'd say I was pretty fortunate. It used to belong to a Japanese person, since the markings I can't remove are in Japanese. I love the colours of the bag, so was glad to get it.

I have seen what I think were some 'Shirt Tales' plush toys there. (Anyone know them? I knew of them as a kid) but wasn't 100% sure since I couldn't find any tags. I wasn't that interested in them since they aren't that cute. Considering the prices they go for on ebay is minimal, I don't regret leaving them. Still would've been nice to have one.

What's sad about the place I go to is that they regularly trash their goods. I don't know where they go, but I presume the dump. You can see them when they do their dumps. It sucks, but I understand why. Since they can't keep things there forever.

Speaking of restoration, I fixed up the eyes of a plush toy of mine about two months ago. I couldn't do it 100% correct  because I don't have fine hands to do the edges but the before and after is fantastic. It was just a simple idea as well.

Here we see the before. Shaun The Sheep's eyes have gotten beat up (I always take care of my plush toys, I don't know what happened) and he is full of dust.

After. Touched up with a simple sharpie! I couldn't do the edges of the eye 100%, because one mistake and it's doomed. It's permanent marker! O-O! You can see the spot on missed on the left (his right eye)
This picture does not show the fluff removed from him. Since I did that after taking this picture. I just used a vacuum cleaner at full power, it was a scary experience since his legs looked like they could get sucked off any moment! It didn't remove all the fluff, but it did an ok job! Didn't know what else to do

I like that the sharpie made the eyes look all shiny and brand new. Much better than the black stuff that was on his eyes initially!
