So from what I've found they started in Canada?

History of Pound Puppies

Pound Puppies were the genius of Mike Bowling, a worker on an automotive assembly line. He came up with the idea of creating, not just one style, but several different looks for the puppies to appeal to a wide audience. He began designing them in 1984 and licensed them in 1985. Irwin, a Canadian company, released the toys in Canada.

After licensing, Bowling tried to sell his line to several companies in the United States. Each turned him down. Tonka, which traditionally made durable toy trucks, snapped up the Pound Puppies and released the stuffed animal line under their own brand. These toys were so popular that they inspired animated television series that lasted two seasons as well as a feature film.

In fact, it was a television special that introduced the puppies to children all over the United States. After the cartoon special was aired the toys hit the shelves of toy stores everywhere and became one of the most popular toys of the 1980s.

Puppy Style

The toys were created with one body style but Bowling kept the look fresh with small differences in each:

    * There were three different ear styles.
    * There were six colors that the dogs could come in.
    * There were three different eye colors.
    * Some had spots.

The puppies all had big, sad eyes and long floppy ears. Each pup had a heart emblem by the tail with a "PP" on it and a dog peeking around the heart. This guaranteed the purchaser that they had an authentic Pound Puppy.

Like Cabbage Patch Kids, each Pound Puppy came with an adoption certificate. You could choose your puppy and bring it home in its special carrying case and then send off the papers to officially adopt it. Like TY Beanie Babies, the puppies became popular with collectors.

Other Versions

Smaller versions of the Pound Puppies were created and some were used as giveaways in kid's meals for various fast food restaurants. Pound Purries, a line of kittens that could be adopted, were also released. These also have the heart with the "PP" logo but have a cat peeking around the heart rather than a dog.

Mwahaha. Google skills. ;)

Bad things happen when I'm stuck up late studying. Of course internet distractions don't help efficiency either but they do keep me awake.

Oh, and it's Yuppies, not Yappies. I mistyped it in the thread title!
