Prices for 80's toys!!!
« on: Thursday 08 April 2010, 02:15 am »
WHY has the prices went up sooo drastically for 80's toys.  I understand that they are popular but looking on Ebay some of these prices are crazy!!!

Sometimes over $100.00 dollars for 1 toy.  I understand you want to make a profit but this kind of pricing is just sad.

Maybe I am just being cheap but I bought a MIB Wee Wild Things for $15.00 including shipping last year and a wole lot of My Precious Puffs for $5.00.
No My precious puffs are $40.00 a pop for 1 and Wee Wild Things are $30/$40 a pop.

What is going on?!?!?!?

Is anyone else frustrated with these skyrocketing prices??

A bunch of people apparently have set up some eBay shops with BIN prices. And I have seen those items sit there for years. When ever a single similar item actually goes up for .99 auction it might make $10-20. So, I think they're just counting on someone desperate/impatient enough to buy the toys (most of them are kind of obscure ones that come up regularly over the years, just not incredibly often).

I agree with Zuse.  I'm actually starting to catch these people with the ridiculously high BIN bid on these items at $10 and then it goes into their store for $80-$200 (I saw this just the other day on a Darling Dinos item... yeah, good luck with that).

I'm actually wondering though- ebay has changed its policy, starting in the last few days, so that when you run a search the buy it nows come up with the auctions results (not in their own group at the bottom of the page anymore).  I ran a bunch of completed searches today because I just listed a bunch of 80s toys and wanted to see what their going rates were, and I actually saw a lot of these BINs were taken.  It was bizarre.  If it keeps up, where these high BIN prices are mainstream, I'd say the prices are heading up.  Probably its just a temporary spike before everyone wisens up though.

Weird. I know that some of them are buying things up cheap to stock the store. But I was also just saying if you let the supply/demand for some of these rarer things run its course in an auction, it's not going to go very high. Like, a .99 auction could go for that if there is only one bidder. So I can understand maybe a BIN of maybe what one sold for recently. But there is no way that every single toy should be selling for $60.

I agree with everything said. I'm especially annoyed at those Fairies of Cottingley Glen prices. D< Do those sellers even get any sales at all? Seriously.

It has been like this on Australian ebay for a while. I think it's annoying.

It's VERY annoying.  I am having to modify all my searches now to cut out the BINs... there are just too many listings now, and come on, I'm not gonna buy the $60 whathaveyou that's been there foraslongastime.

I completely agree with you Zuse, the auctions that run their course usually stay reasonable, or if they go up, it's because two people want it.  Supply/Demand, market value and all that.  It's just bizarre when these sellers pick stuff up for the .99 and then think somehow they are going to get $80.  Maybe they do... once a year?

I've been wondering about this. I have a PJ Sparkles plush and people here told me it was worth up to about $70, so I checked ebay--one in similar condition to mine (and not complete) is posted for $99, with one in good condition for $175! That seems insane to me--I bought it for a couple of cents at a thrift store and I'm sure that's where other people are getting these toys as well. Do they ever really sell for that much?!  Are these prices reasonable or are they hugely inflated?

The $99 price is a little inflated- does it have a collar?  I'm one of the ones that has had one bid up to $70+ (don't remember the exact value), and another in less good shape go for $40.  I think the current market value for them is somewhere between there.  Both mine were yellow though, so I'm not sure if color affects the price.  I don't remember which animals they were either.

I remember the higher priced one went to Japan.  I've also sold Yum Yums that have gone for really high prices to Japanese bidders.  So, it matters who's looking also.

Yeah, Ebay has pretty much eliminated store listings and converted them all to fixed price. That's why you see all the buy it nows mixes with auctions. I guess they tested in on UK Ebay and Australia Ebay and supposedly most buyers liked it, so they decided to go with it. I do wish they made the "Auctions" button a bit bigger and easier to find for those just shopping for auctions!
I sell on Ebay myself and try to price things for what I've found completed auctions for. Sometimes there isn't a completed auction though and really no way to tell the value of something. Sometimes I price too high, sometimes I price too low.  I quit using auctions because every time I use them Ebay has an outage and my $80 item goes for .99 cents. Unfortunately, I lost my job a year ago and haven't been able to find another one, so I have to use Ebay for income. That means finding items at Goodwill for $2 and trying to sell them for $10 and the less common item for more then that. My husband, who is a welder by trade, hasn't been able to keep a job for longer then 90 days the last couple of years. Every place wants to lay him off before he can get health insurance and benefits. So, now he's working with me too. There's probably a lot of people out there trying to survive by selling on Ebay. It's that or gather aluminum cans on recycling day, but there's already several people around here doing that.. lol
I'm not trying to justify the really bad gougers, there's someone on there who lists EVERY toy for $199, even fairly common plushes. Of course, no one buys them, but it's still annoying to run across her listings.
When I'm buying toys for me, I prefer to find them at the thrift and so forth. BUT, if it's the last toy I need for a set, then I buy on Ebay. I love buying fix-it type lots too..

I would say a HUGE part of the reason for the hike in prices too is that people are parting with things they really don't want to sell, but they have to sell them. I have a couple of my more valuable toys up for Buy It Now. I have them priced so that it won't hurt so bad to give them up. I don't want to sell them. I will if the price is right. I'm sure I'm not the only one doing that.
The good thing with the new structure is that it costs more to list items "fixed price" now. If you don't upgrade to the $50 per month store, it costs .20 cents each time you list a fixed price buy it now item. If you don't have a store, it's now free to list .99 cent auctions, up to 100 per month. That should lower the prices on a LOT of things. It should encourage sellers to price more competitively or use auctions. WE'll see right?

Funny story about auctions. Last auction I had was for Jurassic Park stuff. A set that usually went for $35. So, I started mine at $10 and it didn't get a single bid, ended without selling. I listed it with a buy it now of $35 and it sold the next day. Strangely enough, some people hate auctions because they always get sniped at the end. I love auctions myself!

It's like Mimic who is priced high because the collectors made it so. I remember on a different forum somebody wanted a snoozie? cassette, and there was somebody willing to sell them a copy not even the original cassette for $150 USD.

It's not like that in Australia but boy I wish it was. If you start an item at 99c you have to pay 30c for listing, then if it only sells for 99c you pay 5c fees and then by the time paypal takes fees too you're left with like 25c or something. It sucks.

I am hoping more unboxed items come up for sale.  It seems like alo of the items i see is MIB.  I am not a MIB collector.  I love the fix up lots also.  I am hoping to see more of them.

I agree with people using Ebay to make money due to unemployment.  I myself use ebay to sell stuff to fund my toy buying habit :)  I have a job so I do not rely on it for my income.

I am hoping the prices start to go down.  I am getting a little annoyed with it :P  I think they should make themall Buy It Now/Best Offer.  That way the seller can have an idea about what people are willing to pay for the item when a buyer makes an offer.

Anyway I am rambling here...lol
I am off to bedZZzzzZZZ

There definitely is a lot of MIB lately! It's gotta be people who need money just trying to sell the thing they have that is worth the most. I don't collect MIB either, but everything I look for is MIB.. Grrr...
