Playmates Baby Doll from 1985
« on: Sunday 06 June 2010, 08:49 am »
I came across this doll while babysitting. It was really unique looking. I took pictures with my cell phone but not exactly sure how to get those on my computer. But here is a description:

Approx 12 inches long.

Cloth body (with something hard inside but no opening for batteries). Vecro on both hands so they can be stuck together. Circular piece on metal on bottom left side of bum.

Hard plastic molded head. Curly hair which is molded. Moving eyes.

Back on head says "3131 PM-13   Playmates  1985"

Maybe next time I go back there to babysit I will remember to take my digital camera.

Anyone got any ideas?

Anyone know the name of this doll?

What does the string do? Music?

Any pics of the doll new?

Looks like this doll reused the head mold?

Also reminds me of the Jesco Kewpie dolls a bit.

There is no doubt in my mind that all three of those dolls are based off of Kewpies. Kewpies are over 100 years old! There are plenty of Kewpie fakies.

This one's from a company called "Irwin" and is from the 50s. (I just found one of these at the flea market today.) The curl on the head, large, "googly" eyes, and chubby cartoon baby appearance make it obvious that these dolls are mimicking the Kewpie character.

Unfortunately, I'm having difficulty finding that particular doll as well. Shoot! I guess we'll have to keep looking.

The doll on ebay you showed has a pull string. Does your doll seem to have had a pull string at one point?

Those definitely look like Kewpies alright! Or at least Kewpie fakies. I had an old one from the '60s that was my mom's. I have no idea whether or not I still have it.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but they were also the subject of some strange Japanese ads for "Tarako," which was a pasta made from carp eggs. Though they're kind of creepy, I find them to be quite fascinating.

Yup, Rachel! Kewpies (or, at least, a variant of) are the mascot of the QP food company in Japan and of Kewpee Burger in the midwest.

That doesn't help the search, though. :(

Plenty of Playmates fake Kewpies... but none of the kind we're looking for! :(

I've had this doll since I was real little like 2. Still have doll when  you pull the string it plays a lalluby and the head moves around. I don't know if she was bought new or was second hand but I loved her I still have her but her head don't move anymore.
