Baby Beans :: Itsy Bitsy

"Soft as a baby's bottom!"

Baby Beans were produced by Mattel from 1970-1984. They were soft bodied baby dolls stuffed with polystyrene bean bag balls, and plastic heads. Meritus took over production from 1991-98 with their own line, and Estrela had their own concurrent line to Mattel in Brazil during the 1970-80's and again in 2011-12. They were very popular, hence the sheer amount of them all over the world! Itsy Bitsy Baby Beans

There were three different coloured Itsy Bitsy dolls produced in 1973. They measured about 8 inches high and had plastic heads (same mould with differently painted eyes) and fabric hands with velcro on. They were produce by Mattel, then Burbank Toys (with mattel) which varied slightly. There were also Mexican and brazilian versions, of which I have only found one of each.

Mattel Originals

The Mattel only version of Pidgy had a lace ribbon on chest and wrists, where as the Burbank Toys version had polka dot ribbons. It's possible the lighter pink version of Piffle is the Mattel only version (yet to find packaging) as the Burbank Toys version is bright pink. I've only found one version of Poofum.

Variations

I've found two versions of the blue doll, and the pink doll was made in hot pink and a lighter pink (i've seen these photographed together). I've also found an orange doll marked "Itsy Bitsy" and "Mattel" which has a completely different face mould - where does it fit in?

  • Pidgy Variation
  • Piffle Variation
  • Orange Doll (unknown name)

These dolls were also produced in Mexico by Cipsa, and in Brazil by Estrela. The dolls looked slighty different.

  • Brazilian Piffle
  • Mexican Pidgy

Packaging

The Mattel packaging didn't include the names of the dolls on the sides like the Burbank Toys version, but all illustrations were the same.

  • Pidgy - Mattel
  • Pidgy - Burbank Toys
  • Piffle - Burbank Toys
  • Poofum - Burbank Toys
