Sweet Secrets :: Animal Charms

"An adorable transformable world!"

Sweet Secrets were produced by Galoob from 1985 into the mid 1990's. Later on, a few of Galoob's dolls and playsets were released Blue Box. They started off as a series of lockets which transformed into dolls and animals, and as they grew in popularity Sweet Secrets became more diverse, even expanded into playsets.

They were sold in the US, UK and other parts of Europe, and I currently know of one name variation:

  • UK & US: Sweet Secret
  • Italy: Dolci Segreti

Animal Charms

Animal charms came with a hair-clip and necklace which they could be attached to and worked in exactly the same way as the doll charms. They varied in shape, some quite dramatically from the dolls.

There were seven original animals charms produced. Tutu Toucan was added as the line expanded, but I don't think it was too popular as it was in the 1985 catalogue, but not the 1986. There were also six new characters produced re-using some of the moulds but given different colours and names. These ones are often referred to by sellers and collectors as colour variations of the originals, although this was not what was intended by Galoob. The toucan and Koala moulds weren't used for the second series, and the puppy mould was used twice. Apart from the colouring, the other most noticeable difference was to the lack of detailing to their faces.

The six new designs were also sold by Blue Box and were identical to Galoob's in both colour and name (although Blue Box packaging has Shinie Mouse and Beary Sweet named the other way around, which I have taken to be a mistake).

Galoob Variation

These variations were used in the Beauty Bows line (see Jewellery for more info), but some (if not all) were also sold separately. Some were pearly and some weren't.

Packaging

This is all the different types of packaging I have come across for the animal charms.

These are all original series packaging, from US, Italy and France.

These are second series, US and Italy.

This is the packaging for the Galoob shimmery colour variations.

This packaging is marked Galoob and Rainbow Toys, and due to the spelling of "jewellery" suspect it is UK. Each one came with a random mix of charm (original series doll or animal) and a Dangle. It's a little unclear if the Dangles was the free jewellery or the charm!

This one is Bluebox.

Galoob Catalogue

The top image is from the 1985 Galoob Catalogue. Notice how Mac The Mouse has a gray, rather than blue, body. In the 1986 catalogue (lower down) he then had a blue body. I wonder if this means he was also sold in all gray at first?

In 1986 Tutu Toucan was no longer featured.

This is from the 1994 catalogue.
